It is not a holiday to celebrate the the god of railroad x-ings.
It is not a holday to celebrate road signs (Deer X-ing).
X-mas is not even a holiday!
Christmas IS a holiday, around the same time as this X-mas. which many people here (and everywhere else) talk about.
Christmas is a holiday named after Jesus Christ.
Not looking for a debate on the subject.
I didn't make the holiday.

It is NOT an abbreviation...it is removing the most essential part.
It is very personal to some people...and I will be the first in line to claim it personal.

It bothers me also to see X instead of Christ. I've been told that in Greek, "X" is the symbol for Christ Jesus. Didn't help me much as it still bothers me...
...but what gets me more is people saying "Happy Holidays" and not "Merry Christmas." I heard this week on Dr. Dobson's radio program that some department stores have forbidden their employees to say "Merry Christmas." I think Target is the leader is removing Christ from Christmas.

The X is a logogram-a sign used to stand for a word. See: http://xoomer.virgilio.it/bxpoma/akkadeng/cuneiform.htmsection 5.2 (for logogram) and 5.3 for "phonetic complement" "X-mas" is a logogram with a phonetic complement. From what I've read, it's been used by Christians since the 1500's. As for people wishing me Happy Holidays, I can't see getting upset at anyone wishing me happy anything. I believe Christmas is a holy day, or "holiday" as the phrase came to be spelled.

There are other holidays that are celebrated during December - Hanukkah for Jewish folks and Yule (for pagans). I think saying Happy Holiday's or Season's Greetings is more reasonable than assuming that everyone you meet is a Christian and celebrates Christmas. The store is also probably selling menorahs and Hanukkah cards and possibly even Yule logs, holly, misteltoe, etc. I suppose it would make more sense for employees to recognize which customer is buying which items and respond appropriately with Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah or Merry Beltain/Samhain or "Have a nice Solstice." To be honest, I think that instituting a 'rule' forbidding employees from uttering a phrase is pretty ridiculous but I still don't understand why you'd take offense at Happy Holidays. You know you celebrate Christmas, so why take offense at an obvious well wishing in your direction as opposed to taking it in the spirit (of Christmas) that you celebrate? Would you take offense if someone wished you a Happy Hanukkah or a Merry Samhain? I just don't get it. I get sick of people boycotting Target for some fictional anti-Christian reason. Look at urbanlegends.com or search on target; most of the right-wing condemnation of Target is based on a straw man. All the godless, heathen behavior Target is supposedly responsible for is in the mind of some right-wing nut who wants to control his fellow man.

Target was the first to single out the Salvation Army Bell Ringers.
This year, they want the income from Christmas Shoppers, but not the commitment to honor the reason for the season.
Target is not a straw man. They've got it coming!
Of Course, Christians who get too caught up in the expensive gifts, and not the sharing of one's life, service, commitment, etc. get a bit off too - and they're being led away from the HOLINESS of the day by merchants like Target.

There are other holidays that occur during the month of December. I happen to celebrate one of them. Yes, it's ridiculous to forbid employees to say "Merry Christmas", but it's just plain scary to me to see the religious fanaticism manifest in this thread.

Yes, there are many religions that celebrate during the month of December. Each religion has a right to celebrate. Where I see a problem is when a store(and I will not name it) takes a stance of deciding to call "Christmas Trees" "Holiday Trees". What the heck?? It's a Christmas Tree.
Good Grief. Now the store has received so much heat from it that they have decided to change their advertising & signs back to "Christmas Trees".

There are many celebrations during the last few months of the year. Why single out one to be ignored? An employee should be allowed to courteously respond to any celebration if they desire to.
As usual the posts have gotten off track. Do people not think about what is being posted and immediately assume what is being said? Religious fanaticism? Allowing an employee to respond in any way they choose is religious fanaticism? Now that's just crazy...
Why all of a sudden after many, many years is it politically incorrect to say Christmas? I've never heard anyone say they were offended.
