A selfish demand is something that comes with threat of punishment - moodiness or tears or anger.

It is imperative that she ask to be his first priority (for the marriage's sake not for selfishness) and she should do this as a respectful request. i.e. he is not punished for refusing. However she should keep the issue on the front burner not allowing it to be brushed aside.
