Some of you may have heard that at a recent hockey game in Montreal, fans booed the singing of the US National Anthem.

Tonight, I attended a game between the Vancouver Canucks and the Phoenix Coyotes.

Before the game started, they played the anthems, and over 18,000 Canadian hockey fans stood and cheered and (I've never seen this before) actually sang the Star Spangled Banner.

So just so you know, although our Government is not with you, many of our people are.

Thanks for telling this. The Montreal game was disheartening. Don Cherry must have gotten through to the nobler Canadian spirit!

Another thanks added to the pot. My cousin-in-law is Canadian, and she's been supportive. But, then she lives in the USA with my cuz.

I'll trade you one or more Dixie Chicks and my cousin in Juneau for whoever led the crowd in the Star Spangled Banner.

Good to know that we still have some support out there.

You know at the following game after the booing incident they played a taped message by Jean Beliveau (or some other oldtimer)over the loud speakers at the Bell Center. That put an end to the silliness.

This anti-americanism is regional, most of Canada doesn`t feel this way. I think.

Slap, do you really think the Canadian gov`t is not helping? I think they ARE. But they are being sneaky about it.

I figure part of the reason they are hiding it is because of the upcoming Quebec provincial election. They don`t want to give the PQ ding dongs any fuel. It looks as though they may be out on their collective keesters soon.

I know you are going to hate me for saying this, butttt...
(as I know there are a few posters from Quebec).
Quebec statistically has a deeply-imbedded culture. Quebec people are statistically more open-minded than the rest of the country. When it comes to most attitudes towards sex, love, life, jobs, they are very liberal on most topics.
Why is it that the American Anthem was booed?

I dont know.

There are all kinds of derrogatory remarks coming out of the cabinet meetings (another one the other day...three weeks ago it was SCREW the americans!!)
Jean Cretien is making Canada look bad by tolerating this stuff. If I were HIM, I would have sent an apology to the team, and held a press conference (oka,y he is busy, but at least SOMEOME should have ) regarding the war.
His non-chalant attitude, combined with Quebec's booing, tells me that these French are gonna get us in a lot of deep trouble if it keeps up like this (sorry, I know someone posts here from Quebec)
These are of course general statements based on statistics and recent facts. I know not everyone falls into these categories, but the world is watching...what kind of message is Canada sending??!!!

No they are not. I am the Quebecer here so trust me on this one.

Both my H`s were francophone and I have dated several french men. They are not as sexually open as you might think. It took me a long time to get my H into the game. However I seem to have done too good a job English Canada SEEMS to be more reserved. but that`s what they show on the surface, they are actually alot friskier than Quebecers in my experience. Just because we have porno movies on public televion at 2 o`clock on a weekday afternoon does not make us necessarily a more open liberal society.

Why is it that the American Anthem was booed?

I dont know.

I`ll tell you why...you open the front page of the Journal de Montreal and you read..."Bush`s murderous war has begun...."

(sorry, I know someone posts here from Quebec)

Slap,

Thanks for letting us know. I think we needed that .

Petals

PS. I saw some of my neighbors stop by my window and read the sign about the stolen flag.

I don't like all this national anthem booing...it's just wrong...

People can have their own opinions on politics, but booing is just childish...

Slappy,

I grew up on the US side of Lake Ontario, and spent my undergraduate years about 20 minutes from the Canadian border. This is for you (I only know the two verses).

O Canada! Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North, strong and free!
From far and wide,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

Refrain
O Canada, glorious and free!
We stand on guard, we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee!

O Canada! Where pines and maples grow.
Great prairies spread and lordly rivers flow.
How dear to us thy broad domain,
From East to Western Sea,
Thou land of hope for all who toil!
Thou True North, strong and free!

Refrain
O Canada, glorious and free!
We stand on guard, we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee!

I can remember the good ol' days when the French-Canadians didn't despise me as nearly as much as they do now...

Daisy, I just finished a sociology assignment about canada statistics and research shows that Quebec is more liberal on most fronts. Not ALL may be, but for example, when asked if it was alright for their daughter (to a couple) to being home a lesbian girlfriend, over 60% said they would support her. In Ontario, that dropped to about 40.
They are more liberal-minded than the rest of the country, statistically, yet I know what you are saying about Quebec in general and understand your perspective, because you have experienced it first hand.

K-I live 20 minutes NORTH of the border (5 mnis from Lake Ontario)
you lived in buffalo?

Carina,

I've never lived in Barfalo, but I grew up in Rottenchester... . I went to Clarkson College of Hockey as an undergrad, which is only 10 min away from the St. Lawrence seaway. I used to spend a couple weeks every summer up in the lakes region about 45 min north of Kingston. Man---I haven't been back there in 20+ years... it'd be great to see it.
