If you could predetermine the way you will die, but not the time, would it be,

A. a slow, tortuous death, or
B. a quick painless one.

Please consider that the slow, tortuous death gives you much more opportunity to reflect on your life and REALLY appreciate what you're about to lose, i.e., the final, but likely best growth opportunity.

Ohhh gosh, this is so hard. Lemme see ....

Man, I'll have to think about this one and get back to you ... cuz yanno, that slow torturous death thing really does have it's opportunities to learn stuff.

Be back later.
Jo
I have some questions regarding the slow torturous death before I give my final answer:

1. Can I also be lied to and abhorently disrespected during it?

2. Will there be deceit and blame too?

3. Any humiliation involved?

Jo
My only preference is B. I am experiencing the ist kind of death now, but I do grow myself and learn a lot.

Vanilla, with Pe-Te's Cajun BBQ sauce on top!

I had a chemistry professor who, when he didn't know the answer 2 a question from one of the s2dents, would say "Five minutes after death, all will be revealed 2 you." So the learning oppor2nity of a slow, painful, tor2uos death would not be for nothing. ...at least for 5 minutes, that is.

Quick and painless. I do NOT want to see it coming. I've had enough stress in my life.

If you're about to die, what good is reflection gonna do you? In a matter of minutes/hours none of it is going to make any difference.

But I guess quick and painless is only better if you're ready to meet your final judgement without a "heads up".

My instinct, merely cuz it sounds more noble somehow, is to go with the slow tortuous one. Then I thought, as much bravado as I'd like to display, I might risk crying like a five year old girl and wetting my pants. That's not growth. I'd rather keep my illusion of dignity and go fast before I have a chance to fail myself.

The bigger question for me is, what are you dying for. I'd risk a lot for a righteous cause, but if I was to die for the sake of dieing....fast, without soiling myself.

2long - OT here.

Speaking of Hogan's Heros, several years ago we had an au pair from the former East Germany. She was 19 at the time, was 9 when the wall came down. Her english was really good and she learned it only after reunification.

Anyway, she taught me the german translation for phrases I'd frequently need like, "Just a minute, I'll get her" for when her german friends called.

I explained that the only german I knew was what I learned on Hogan's Heros. She had no idea what that was. Eventually, we stumbled on to a re-run on Nick at Night or something and she howled! Couldn't get her away from it!

haha, I can appreciate uh...um...what the heck is the word anyways....parody? as much as the next person. But the question is legitimate.....if our state of mind is a factor in life after death, then the slow torturous one is the more likely choice...in the scheme of eternity, the time to die is of little consequence...but the ramifications are enormous. A secondary (but maybe not applicable for this poll), consideration would be the greater value the folks left behind put on how someone dies.... and could effect some greater good that the dying person feels beneficial as well.

Mmmm, neither today, thank you...

I WOULD like a jumbo jack, curly fries, and large orange drink...
I saw a commercial last night, for Butterfinger, I think, anyway, something crunchy. An old guy is munching away and his toothless wife is looking at him longingly. So, he takes out his upper & lower dentures and hands her the candy bar, she puts the teeth in... I can't remember what the tag line was because I was laughing.

So, I'm ready to go as God wills, but I'd prefer not to have to share teeth with anyone on the way there.
Gosh, WAT, so many variables. Isn't it interesting when you think you're asking a straightforward question such as thing and find out that no one can just answer? And we wonder why we don't communicate well.

Anyway, since I don't know all the variables, I will make my assumptions and just answer without asking questions. I want to go fast...massive stroke in my sleep when I'm home alone. (If H is home and works fast he could and would turn it into the other one. )

I'm so disappointed. After all isn't this YOUR thread? Didn't you ask this question?

Well,.........................I'm still waiting..........................

NOT once have you responded with a smug superior attitude and given these simple peasants the truth as you see it, by simply " dismissing " any point or example that you your self have not brought up.

However, The main task your neglecting (IMO) is informing the masses what exactly IS "relevant" to a discussion!
Or even more important, what is "irrelevant" in their lives (or to the topic) IF it doesn't fit into your perspective of the issue.

I trust you'll look into this this matter promptly. Thank you

Slow and torturous, of course, because the opportunities for growth are many!

A good method for growth opportunities would be if someone severed one of my arms while I was busy taking care of their needs, but missed one or two that I wasn't aware of. I could prevent my death if I chose not to bleed. If I bled to death, I guess it would be my own stupid fault for choosing to respond that way.

I could work on my growth as the other arm was severed by the same person. If I didn't learn to not respond by bleeding when the first arm was severed, then the person would be helping me by giving me another opportunity to grow.

Hopefully, before both my legs were chopped off, I would have learned that the person with the machete (sp?) was not inflicting harm to me, they were giving me opportunities to grow. I would hope that I would thank them before my last breath.

Also, I would have had the opportunity to learn how to clean up the mess that I caused when I chose to bleed all over the place. If I grew enough during the experience, I would have all the blood cleaned up from one severed limb before the next was chopped off.

After my death the person could just complain about the leftover mess that I couldn't clean up by myself and walk away muttering in disgust that since I didn't make more of my growth opportunity he gave me then I probably wasn't Life Material in the first place.

I'm surprised more people didn't choose slow and torturous--especially if you choose to not respond by bleeding to death you'll get over it and live! If you're Life Material in the first place, that is.
WAT,

Good to see you still have your intelligent sense of humor. A couple of suggestions for your NEXT poll:

Which would you rather be, an unremorseful, self-righteous poster OR an egotistical, pontificating poster? (And please discount the recent evidence that it is entirely possible to be both.)

Which "growth experience" would you rather be sentenced to, twenty years of hard labor or twenty years of being forced to read posts written by SNL?

It's really interesting to see how differently people look at the same simple question.

We all put our own "factors" into this death scenario, so our answers were based on different parameters.

Well, I think we're missing OPTIMAL growth opportunities here. I'd go for the affair, then being served papers, THEN a slow and painful death.

Boy, what a mature and learned person I'd (briefly) be at the end of that.

TA
This reminds me of a scene from the movie The Princess Bride... the one where Wesley is being tortured, his life being sucked away, and the Count is clinically asking him for his reaction, and says something like remember this is for learning purposes (my kids would know the exact line from the movie) LOL
Posted By: anyname Re: Type of death - which would you choose? - 05/28/04 02:02 AM
If we die in 15 minutes or we die in 15 yrs, what difference does it make that we learned something inthe 15 yrs - we won't remember it or know we learned it. There is absolutely no proof there is life after death and it looks very unlikely from where I'm standing. Don't you people look around airports and shopping centres? What would be the point of giving us another crack at life, some place else, some other time? We're so mean and ugly for the most part - who in there right mind would want to invite us back? What would be the purpose of that?

This is it folks! Ecc. 9: 5
Hey! I'm not mean OR ugly! Well...wait...those 10 minutes when I'm not quite awake in the morning...oh, and there's those 3 days prior to my period...hmmm, and when the dog dug up my favorite plant. Yup, you're right. My bad...

It's good to finally be one of the 'beautful people'....can we be perfect as well??
Really, everytime I check on this thread, I think

"A sharp stick to the eye or a glorious slow poison."

Of course, one could heal, with one blind eye, and poison...as in the Princess Bride, (watched it 2 nights ago) Wesley had been taking that particular poison he offered to the kidnapper of Princess Buttercup for years, and he had built up an immunity. What killed the kidnapper, didn't affect Wesley a bit.

Nor did the roll down the mountain right after that. And, that plucky Buttercup, she dived right after him, because, she knew him, because he said "As you wish."

Did I digress?

Lor,

My kids have memorized that whole movie too. The poison is iocaine powder....supposedly tasteless and odorless. And the line when Wesley is being tortured is: "I might one day go as high as five, but I really don't know what that would do to you, so let's just start with what we have. What did this do to you? Tell me. And remember, this is for posterity, so... be honest."
