WW and I went to dinner last night. It was a nice time and pretty quite. We sat at a table in the bar area where a couple of televisions were showing basketball. I did not mention that although she has assured me recently we have nothing in common we sure still like watching and talking basketball.
In short time I noticed a couple sitting at the end of the bar. She is wearing a wedding band and he is not. On closer inspection his ring finger did have the pronounced indent of a recently worn band. I start listening in on the conversation and observing the behavior. As she speaks he leans toward her, intently staring and hangs on her every word like it is life itself. He maintains intense eye contact with her. I can not hear all the words but it is clear she is dumping on someone named “Him”. When she pauses he gives her a comforting and reassuring touch on the shoulder or thigh. Then it’s his turn and it seems he has some similar issues with someone named “She”.
They both check their cell phones and time frequently. Twice during the hour his cell rang and whoever was calling was ignored and sent to voice mail. Can’t imagine who might be calling him. In truth the whole thing was fascinating to watch.
When we got up to leave my WW went to the entrance to wait while I paid. At the same time the gentleman’s “date” got up to go to the restroom. I tried to resist but could not. As I passed him on the way out I paused and said, “Sir, I think your wife wants to talk to you.” You all would have paid for tickets to see his face. He started to stammer something about “Who are you?” and I said goodnight.
I had a great night’s sleep.
