'eh Pep,
Post 'dat uke ?? ova in recovery. Leilana and Twyla may be helpful. As for me, well I can strum a bit.....used to do it on the beach a lot and in Santa Cruz even put out a cup hoping for tips (at least when I was 10 - LOL!!) The tip I got was NOT to give up my day job and I wasn't even working yet..... just kidding.

I used to own 2 kamaka's and sold my 6 string uke to H's best friend. Now I am also in the market for a new used one (best kind are the ones already broken in - LOL!!!). I really would like a Martin but since I play more like a martian, maybe I just better get something a bit less pricey. Now if I could jest find something to help my sing mo' betta'. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="images/icons/shocked.gif" /> <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="images/icons/grin.gif" /> <img border="0" title="" alt="[Razz]" src="images/icons/tongue.gif" />

Orchid!

My Mom and Pop were both born in Santa Cruz! Not too many people actually born and raised there. Mom was born in a little house on May Street. Pop's parents owned and ran a restaurant on the wharf. (NO not Stagnaro's, but Grand-dad was friends of the Stagnaro brothers, and I waitressed @ Stagnaro's while going to college) .... Grand Dad owned The Ideal Fish Restaurant .... which used to be in the middle of the wharf, not on the beach where it is now. He also owned the old Santa Cruz Hotel, downtown. This was before and during WWII.

I have many personal SC stories ... most of them rather ... ahem ... non-MB material. It was waaay back then ... in my wild hippie days ... or was that daze?

I was in Monterey last weekend at a convention..... unseasonably warm weather! No fog what-so-ever all weekend long .... and one speaker spoke of the immune system benefits that fun and laughter provide our bodies .... and driving back home to LaLa land .... I got to wondering .... "Hmmmm? What can I do to increase my fun quotient " ... and a uke just jumped into my head.

I am thinking if I play the uke and sing, I will possibly drive all the teens away .... now that's a real stress reducer! I am possibly the most non-Hawaiian looking woman on the planet.... but soooo what?

I did a web search, and the guitar center near me has a variety of ukes. I'm gonna start with a cheapie and see what fun I can get myself into.

Who knows, sister O .... maybe we can meet up on the wharf in Santa Cruz some day and together panhandle ourselves some "spare" change <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="images/icons/grin.gif" />

It's not a difficult instrument to learn, is it?

Hey,

No make fun of da' lady. She is serious!!! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="images/icons/grin.gif" />

Got my old songs book and the chords are easy. Strum your own speed and sing slow if you no can play fast - LOL!!! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="images/icons/grin.gif" />

Try ebay for ukes so you have an idea of the prices. Don't settle for the kind they sell at costco or touristy places.

There must be some musicians here @ MB?!?!?!? <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="images/icons/smile.gif" />

Hi Pep..

I got my own Kamaka too! da bugga's over 35 years old. Sounds sweet... when someone else plays it. But I guess if I busted out the old song books from elementary school (assuming they don't fall apart) I could fake a few song's.

Play the ukulele!!!?????
I didn't even KNOW how too spell ukulele

My sister when we were in high-school...ordered her own ukulele from the JC-penney catalog...and taught herself....!!!

best thing about that..is we were in Pennsylvania...not a big genre for ukulele players...

Thought that was pretty cool then and now...
she is musicallly inclined and plays the violin, self taught harmonica...etc..taught herself on that as well...

I took piano lessons when I first got married at around 26..and MADE my mom and husband attend a recital that was me and about 40 2nd graders and up!!!!

and most were better than me...

So each christmas I MAKE my sister drag out her violin, harmonica, and ukelele and play along......while I pound out and butcher songs on keys board....

So just to save you all from going through a day with TIPTOE through the TULIPS...

I leave you all with this little ditty...

TINY BUBBLLES.....
IN THE WINE....
MAKES ME HAPPY
MAKES ME FEEL FINE...
TINY BUBBLES...

Ok so it's not Jimmy Buffett...but it's summery, beachy, and annoyingly catchy....and goes great with a ukulele...

You know that poem that goes sompin' like ....

"when I am old I will wear purple, and a red hat that doesn't go ...."

well ..... I'm'a fixin' to add a uke to my red and purple ensemble.

You ALL must admit .... this does sound like FUN! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="images/icons/grin.gif" />

Do you think this uke idea needs to be POJA'd with the man of the house?

I "informed" him of my uke desires and plans more than I asked his opinion. He was .... lukewarm at best.

Pep,

You know, I said at the beginning of the summer that I was going to take guitar lessons. Well, summer is almost over and haven't quite gotten to a lesson yet. Or bought a guitar. Your thread has inspired me to pursue it now. Why not? I have the time, no talent, but who knows.

Why the uke and not the guitar? Just curious. Maybe the uke would be more fun?

They meet once a month and wear the outfit you are describing. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="images/icons/grin.gif" />

We have 4 guitars in our house. I have really small hands .... and the guitars just feel like I'm trying to over reach with my stubby fingers. Also, the uke is so compact, I figure I can travel with it more easily.

I think a banjo would be fun too .... but, I also think it may be more difficult to learn.
