Can anyone who has used one provide a rough idea of what they cost? Per day? Per hour? Is it likely to vary much from state to state?

A lot of the cost depends on what is required.
My WH was a contractor, which meant that he could be anywhere within a hundred mile range. The PI that I spoke to said that it would be extremely hard and very expensive to do surveillance on him due to the distance my WH drove in his work, the lack of any set routine for his days, and the fact that his work was mostly on custom homes which were either in a rural setting or in a subdivision of other homes under construction, which meant that finding an unobtrusive place to conduct surveilance would be very hard. The PI also said that WH would probably easily pick up on anyone following him, since there was generally not a lot of traffic for the PI to use as cover.
However, if you can do some observing of your own prior to hiring a PI, you may be able to determine the most likely times when your WH is meeting the adultery partner and hire the PI for those times. That should save some money.
