First off I want to thank Committed for jinxing me about having not vented in a while...LOL Secondly...I know God only gives us only as much as he thinks we can handle...so would someone please tell him I have enough at the moment?!?! LOL My car needs shocks and struts (garage man said at min. $500), Last night while picking up my son I put my car in park and 10 seconds later my horn honks?!?! I thought it was a fluke so I pulled forward and put it in park and it did it again?!?!, I pushed the power button on our televison and the stinking button went ALL the way in and is now sitting INSIDE the televison (Gawd only knows how much a new televison is going to cost). Wahhhhhhhhh Okay I feel better. Things always have a way of working out. Carry on! Ronda

So, you know, cost of TVs varies. And, there is nothing that says you have to have one. X and I went about 18 months once without a tv. Turned out it was only a blown fuse and cost 30 cents for fix.
I bet you could find a used one for real cheap on craigslist. It wouldn't have the latest technology but I bet you don't have it now. And, you would have to get a digital converter box but, if you are like me and don't have a digital tv, you may need one anyway.
As for me, I need new tires, brakes, alignment, and tuneup on my car.

Your alarm is arming itself.
As for the struts, why did the mechanic tell you this?
Is the vehicle galloping at highway speeds? Is it rocking when you stop? Does it excessively lean when you corner?
Is your car over 100k miles?
If not, he's rippping you off.
I was a mechanic for years before I went into education and I still do all of my own car work.

The TV is probably a cinch to fix. Unplug it and remove the front cover. The button probably just got lodged up against the opening in hole in the cover.
JUST BE CAREFUL!!!! Cathode ray devices (TVs and CRT monitors) contain capacitors that store HUGE amounts of electricity, even when they're unplugged. Don't touch anything else but the button and its housing.
Pariah - If the car were alarm was arming itself, wouldn't it go off as soon as she opened the door to exit the car?

LOL Committed...nice idea!!
Cin....I do need to upgrade...but wasn't going to do it until the first of the year...
Pariah...No my car doesn't rock lean or gallop....it has a horrible knocking sound when going over bumps in the road. He said he thought the mounting plates needed replaced also?? It's a 04 Chevy Malibu and only has 50,000 miles on it.
Seabird...how do I get the front cover off?
My car will alarm itself if I don't lock the door upon exit but NEVER when just putting the car in park and the engine is still running. I'm thinking it's a fuse...my a/c and defroster have moments when they don't want to work also.

One of the pistons could be broken in a strut or the rubber damper on top of the strut mounting plate could be broken, or worse yet, the lower ball joint is bad.
The cheapest is the strut mounting plate.
$500 is alot of money, but not too unreasonable since it requires removing the springs and the strut assembly and then realigning the suspension.
But 50k miles is almost a new car in my world as my 2003 Nissan truck has over 70k and has had no work done yet and my GF's Nissan has 117k and all it's had is brakes and a starter.
Did you hit a really bad pothole or is your roads salted in the winter? That'll eat struts quick along with the CV joint boots.

I live in Pennsylvania...the salt starts flying as early as October and as late as April. We do have potholes but I try extremely hard to avoid them. I also try to go through the car wash on nicer winter days to keep the salt damage to a minimum.
Other than the usual oil changes, new tires, and new front brakes I really haven't had to do much. This is where I miss having a man around to either do the work or see that it gets done. Sigh!

Holy cow... maybe you need to not touch anything electrical until this jinx passes... by all means be extra special careful if you decide to open your TV!! Yep, huge amounts of charge can be stored, even if you've turned the TV off and EVEN if you've unplugged it. It's good to wear a grounding bracelet thingy if you have one...

This thread reminds me of the Dave Barry thing. Woman writes for advice on her M, guy replies with advice on car repair LOL except in this case it really WAS about the car! Something similar to this I've never talked about this before, but I really need the boards advice on what could be a crucial decision. I’ve suspected for some time now that my wife has been cheating on me.
The usual signs… Phone rings but if I answer, the caller hangs up. My wife has been going out with the girls a lot recently although when I ask their names she always says, “Just some friends from work, you don’t know them.”
I always stay awake to look out for her taxi coming home, but she always walks down the drive. Although I can hear a car driving off, as if she has gotten out of the car round the corner. Why? Maybe she wasn’t in a taxi?
I once picked her cell phone up just to see what time it was and she went berserk and screamed that I should never touch her phone again and why was I checking up on her.
Anyway, I have never approached the subject with my wife I think deep down I just didn’t want to know the truth, but last night she went out again and I decided to really check on her.
I decided I was going to park my Jeep next to the garage and then hide behind it so I could get a good view of the whole street when she came home. It was at that moment, crouching behind my Jeep, that I noticed that the Diff cover seemed to be leaking a little oil.
Is this something I can fix myself or should I take it back to the dealer?

Ronda - I can't really tell you how to remove the front cover without actually seeing it. On my TV, you have to open the little front cover plate that slides down to reveal some of the setting buttons and switches. That allows you to remove a small front assembly which exposes the lower frame held on by 4 screws. Remove that and you can then remove the last four screws that hold on the upper front cover. Kind of a PITA, but my TV is a pretty big, rear projection unit.
Most standard picture tube TVs have at minimum 4 screws at the four corners, usually facing the rear. Usually a couple of hidden screws pointing forward, somewhere slightly hidden for aesthetic reasons. If your TV has a little door or panel that hides buttons or switches, look there.

no door or panel...but i'll tackle it this weekend when my strong muscular football player of a son has time to lift it up out of the entertainment center.
Thanks for your advice! MB men have some of the best advice and you are all appreciated more than you know!

O.K., Allurin, check this out. Over the last two months my washer and dryer broke, both fixable but only half done because the repair guy and I have been playing phone tag for three weeks. My dishwasher broke and has not been fixed because repair guy and I have been playing phone tag for three weeks. I had to buy four new tires for my car and my vacuum broke. The toilet handle broke today but ex fixed it and it was cheap. I expect my fridge to go in the not too distant future.
I kid you not, this has all happened over the last two months.

May/June was like that with us and the cars. All three of our cars visited the shop at least once. I also did new brakes on two of the three. The third soon will need new brakes. I've already purchased the parts.
The oldest, my 226K beater was in the shop twice and looks like it will need the other axle replaced, if I don't do it myself.
My wife's car had the same axle replaced twice. Fortunately in May, that repair was "free" since the original repair was still under warranty.
However, with 191K miles on her car and the only repair to date being that axle, I don't have much to complain about.
It's the one that needs new brakes. Of course brakes are maintenance unless you break something, then it's a repair.
So other than oil changes, tires, brakes, belts, etc, her car has been a dream.
We'll be shopping for a "new" one for her next summer.
But it's been a busy past few months with respect to car repairs.
But I'd rather pay for repairs every 3-6 months than payments every month on three cars.

Yeah, if I didn't have student loan money I would be washing clothes in the tub. The dish washer breaking isn't as bad as I thought it would be. Two of my boys are responsible for he dishes and they would let them pile up before either taking them from the dishwasher or putting them in. Now, we don't let them pile up so my kitchen is actually cleaner. Of course, I'm doing more dishes than with the dishwasher working, but it's almost worth it.
I'm hoping that Christmas money might come my way so that I can get a new fridge. I'll just tie a bow to it for Christmas morning.

Well thankfully God knows we are strong women and can handle these little bumps in the road. It takes strong alot of times. A few months (not even a year)after my husband unexpectedly died, I woke to a disaster in my kitchen. The roof was literally leaking buckets of water. The tile was falling faster than I could dial a roofer. It was pouring rain outside but they immediately came to the house to give an estimate. $3,000 and a 2 month wait on the list. This was in October. That meant closer to December. Because of the severity of the leak, they pushed me to the top of the list and started at the first sign of sunshine....which was a couple days later. While they were roofing, I had the furnace man come and get it ready for the winter season. Well, I had a small carbon monoxide leak in the house and the furnace couldn't be turned on...it had to be replaced. $4,500 please. They were all working at the same time. It was chaos. Everything gets done...I walk into my kitchen to dry floors, and a cozy warmth...open up the fridge...to a blast of HOT air. The compressor went out. Ruined all the food...and left me shopping that morning for a new fridge. I've always heard it comes in threes...these disaster thingies. committed
