Serendipitee,
I loved your comment about Florida-----> "God's waiting room." Made me lol

KiwiJ,
Beachcomers no. Sperry Topsiders, yes. "Beach Preppy" was the look. Here in my part of so Cal there was a tennis shoe manufactuer, Vans, that made red ones. Very cool at mh H.S.

People also wore those Mexican sweatshirts. Think Spicccoli in "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" I knew people just like Spiccoli. "Yeeeaaah dude. The waves are gnarly."

BTW, earlier you said bikini. I thought NZ & Aus was topless. My mistake.

WAT,
Beach cats are cool although beaches here don't really have long enough stretches for them due to rocks, jetties Oh and tourists. Clunk. "What did I just runover?" I think they go by sand/wind racers out here and used more often in the deserts.

I was a so so board surfer. My first love was body surfing. Had the Duck Feet. Then I think I was one of the first owners of a Morey Boogie in my city.

I can see a set coming in, "outside."

Betrayed,
Henley's Boys of Summer was me. Whole group of friends. Days at the beach. Nights looking for parties and chicks. But what does Henley say? "You can never look back, never look back."

Even now one of my favorite Summer days would be spent at the beach. Summer wetsuit on; in the water with my body board. Could spend hours out there; wave after wave. Hopefully a pod of dolphins would come by and catch waves.

The "bushy bushy blond hairdo" is gone but I'm still a "dude" in my heart.

CW, you are DEFINITELY younger than me if you didn't wear Beachcombers.

Topsiders weren't really a surfie thing here. More a "city" thing and very preppy/yuppie.

TOPLESS! You have got to be kidding. In Oz they have beach police to make sure everyone's decent. Here, it never "caught on." I do remember once sitting down for lunch at home in my bikini and my father telling me to get properly dressed before I sat at the table.

Ah, it takes me back.... Unfortunately, that time of my life is somewhere I shouldn't go to now as OM was most of my life back then. (He was HS b/f). So, moving onwards but it's been fun hearing where everyone is from.

I realize Topsiders were more preppie in most parts that's why I called it "Beach Preppie." It was much more casusal. Kinda it's own style. Kinda a cross between surfer and Preppie

Are Beachcomers sandals? If so of course we had them but known as "flip flops" or "___ flaps" "Herraci (sp?) sandals, too."

Didn't realize OM was HS BF. W's OM was her co-worker in early 80's. Lost touch. Anyway....

cwmac...so your still a "dude" at heart. I can still hear Spacoli in Fasttimes talking. What a great movie that was, and oh yes, the boys of summer! H and I were living in Panama City FL then. Those were great times. I don't like the remix of that song. It was a Don Henley classic and should have been left alone!!
Lisa, I forgive you for not including us foreigners.

Beachcombers, CW, were sneakers. They were always blue, had a thick white sole with a red line running through the white part. Does that make any sense?

My son wears Vans. He's vegan and they make "all natural no animal product" shoes as well as regular ones.

And, yup, HS b/f from when I was 13 to when I was 18 when I broke up with him but we stayed friends till I married H - and I mean friends - no romantic attachment on my side whatsoever.

Stay away from Woody's.

Spent many years in the service. Lived 24 years in California. Two of our children still live there. Daughter & family in Rancho Bernardo, and Son in Palm Springs. Another daughter returned to NYC, but after 9/11, moved to Montclair, NJ.

My wife and I now live in Missouri's capital city and love it here.

We also have a boomarang(sp?) son here with us, and another daughter in England with her family.

ML, I've been across TX on I10, I20, I30, & I40. Been stationed in San Antonio, San Angelo, Ft Bliss, and Fort Hood. I think we will stay in MO.

Some day, I'll figure out why I'm here on the MB website. When I do, I'll let you all know.

Hi Alberta, I'm in your neighbor city to the north......and yes, in spite of the rivalry, I'm cheering for the Flames. Sorry about the loss, but I'm sure they'll take it in Tampa.
Beachcombers and Fast Times, I barely remember the Brady Bunch.

Ok, I've been here a long time...I was the only person from WV when I first started posting and I seem to STILL be the only one!
ML,
You should have taken some trees to transplant.

I would say tumbleweed doesn't count.

Love TC, It is beautiful there.
I've never been to Texas. I loved your Dolly picture, funny stuff.
Wow ML I lived in Traverse City for like three years. All I remember is that I was still living with my parents and me and the snowblower became very good friends lol. I liked it up there though it was so quite and peaceful. All the wildlife up there, it was nice to go out on the dirt roads and go driving and looking at the wildlife. I always had a blast at Cherry Fest, the only bad part was there were to many Fudgie's there at that time.

And GO BLUE!!!!

GO PISTONS I don't think they are going to win even though I would like them to but I think the game's will be good.
My husband of 18 years has had 2 affairs (1st physical, the one I'm living through now is emotional).
How do I help him see that there's more to saving a marriage then just kids, dog, house? He's only contacting her once a week by phone. They're no longer working at the same company...he's in therapy and in his list of "Why would I want to stay married to Susan (me)? It was all logical and MY ability to provide unconditional love and abilty to forgive. No mention at this time of loving me, yet he says he does...just not in love with me. But he loves her!
He won't read anything, even Surviving Infidelity, and is not considering..."Do I want to give the marriage a 2nd try? If so, do I want to give it 5 mos or 1 year? HELP
ustr, please go start a new thread with this same post. Your post is at the bottom of a thread that is about another topic entirely. Not many people will see it and you won't get the help you need.
Interesting places people live in.

Poe and I live in Ohio, although that might not always be so. Currently we live near a town named after a bean, and has that bean as a mascot, but no such bean is grown in the area.

I've lived all over the country as a child. Florida, Califonia, Mass., Idaho. Each has it's own beauty. I visit Penn, all the time, and will be in West Virginia this July for my family reunion.

I wouldn't mind visiting Texas, I don't even remember if we passed through the state as a kid. A friend of mine is trying to arrange a college trip to Kiwi land. Wouldn't mind going there either. Love to travel.

Indiana

cue
I am Michigan born and Michigan bred, and when I die, I'll be Michigan dead.

And I don't mean the University of Michigan, though I live very close to that god-awful maize and blue pandemonium. I like that other school, you know the one, THE University of Michigan, Michigan State.

Go Spartans!
What I want to know is what is wrong with Texans? They all love their state. It is creepy. They all insist that Texas is not a flat, barren state.

It reminds me of my visit to Seattle, Washington. It rains there all the time. It rained there everyday of my vacation. But Washingtonians will insist that is was sunny, is just about to be sunny, could be sunny. What is up with that?
Seattle native here... and no, I do NOT have webbed feet!!

quote:
It reminds me of my visit to Seattle, Washington. It rains there all the time. It rained there everyday of my vacation. But Washingtonians will insist that is was sunny, is just about to be sunny, could be sunny. What is up with that?

Believer - sorry your visit here was soggy. To ensure the best chance for sun, there are only a random handful of weeks during the summer that I would reccommend for visiting. Otherwise, you get kind of "peek-a-boo" weather around here.

I work in a two-story building that has many windows, and on any given spring day, we may have rain pelting the windows in sheets, then minutes later have to pull the shades because the sun is too bright!

So the Washingtonians you were referring to were probably correct on all counts. We who live here just learn to be eternally optimistic about the weather... what else can we do??

Does anyone else have the lovely creature called a "slug"?
Or are we the only lucky ones...?? Just curious.

Shelle
Actually, believer..the state I really fell for was ...California (sorry ML! I'm not betraying you, really!)

But Texas does have some good points.... Although I must admit, right now it is 90 degrees and the humidity is revolting in my part of Texas....sigh....

See, even here in Texas we can see the truth...sometimes.
My visit to Seattle was 8 days, and yes, it rained every day. That was fine with me because I live in Southern California. But it drove me crazy with all the people, EVERYONE, telling me how it was sunny or would be sunny. Why can't they just admit it is RAINY???????

But my boys, 19 and 22, did get a kick out of all of the slugs - even took pictures.

Also I have been through Texas, from Corpus Christi to San Antonio and up. It was flat, desolate, with straight roads that went on forever. What is with these Texan's? They all think it is paradise, but it looks more like Hell.
I lived in Seattle for a few months, I swear it rained every single day, seriously. And the slugs, OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!

Believer, My bro, completely denied everyday as the rain was falling that it rained everyday, what is that???????

SnowBelle, so your from MI, is that why the name?? I have to love another Sparty.....

KY,
sunny today, who knows what tomorrow brings
Central North Carolina, y'all

Do you think there might be more regional MB meetings if this thread continues??
kyellow4 - Same thing with me. Went to visit sis, and as we stood in the rain, soaking wet, she kept telling me that it wasn't usually like this. Hmmm, big time denial.

dmb1967
Kansas... Home of the Jayhawks, KSU Wildcats, wheat, birthplace of Pizza Hut, and, of course, the Wizard of Ahhhhhhs.
believer, I lived in North San Diego County for 2 years while hubby was in the Marines. Being from Washington, it was like a 2-year vacation from the rain... and I initially thought it was great!

Then, on the three or so occassions that it DID actually rain down there, I had to laugh at all the SoCal drivers who acted like they forgot how to drive just because a little moisture was falling from the sky! It was hilarious!

I really liked being able to plan outdoor activities for ANY day we wanted, but the smoggy air and brownish bushes got old after awhile.

And our christmas tree was pathetic! Trucked in from who-knows-where, it was like a Charlie Brown tree... so sad. That really made me miss home.

Come back to Seattle in August and I promise you'll love it. It's the month we all live for up here.

Glad to hear others have slugs too - except the kind that nerlykrazy had sounds a lot more slimy than ours!!

I'm from the province of Alberta. Hey there Alberta, I sincerely was sorry to see the Flames lost at home last night and have to play game 7 in Tampa Bay. I used to live in Cowtown, so going back to cheering for the Flames isn't too painful.

Hey there Binder, we're neighbours in the same city it would seem! Too bad the Oilers couldn't pull it together like the Flames this year, eh?

So on this thread if I count Alberta, Binder, someone from the maritimes (sorry, forgot name) and me, that makes only 4 canucks.....so is infidelity that much less prevalent in Canada, or are we just more reserved about discussing it?? Hmmmm.....I recall that the Dv rate here is more like 40% but I don't know about infidelity stats....maybe I'm thinking too much on a fun thread!!

Jen
Hiya Jen.....nice to see some locals here, but hard to believe from the same city.

It's a small world.......but I wouldn't want to paint it.
Here is a Texan....sorry, would have MUCH rather been laughing with you all on this thread last night, but had to deal with reality last night...

I think I had better keep my Texas roots to myself...keep a low profile, so to speak!

Send some of your spirit my way, believer!!
northwest nj. i use to live in south jersey for awhile----would love to do a jersey get together---sounds like fun at the shore time!!! and you pennsylvanians can come too!
Ummmm…am I the only Minnesotan (read: mini-soooo-ton) here? East Central…Cambridge to be exact…roughly 55 miles from either of the downtowns (that would be either Minneapolis or St. Paul).

Oh c’mon….there have to be some other GL-ers here…
Another Georgian, here! (hey, Lisa103 and patibelle). I hail from the "Big Chicken" region but spent 8+ years in Warner Robins.

ML, did you hear they're going to divide Alaska into two states?
Yeah, that means TX will be the *third* largest state in the union! hahahahahahahaha

Mitzi, Mr. Turtlehead and I are planning to move to WV in about a year, so you'll have company, dear. (We're not moving so that you'll have company, lest you misunderstand. We're compassionate, but not THAT compassionate!)

Hi all,

Another one living in Northern California, but I have lived on been in most of the states and cities mentioned so far. Yup, that probably includes you Anyone.

However, this is for Mel. My W is from Texas, that is where we met and married and lived for awhile. It is truely a "state of mind".

Piece of geography for you folks. If you live in Texarkana TX you live closer to Chicago, than you do El Paso. Put the old string to the globe on that one.

Mel where in the Piney Woods do you live? If you don't mind my asking?

JL

Melody,

Lubbock! What everyone doesn't know is that Lubbock does have trees, the just grow sideways. Been through there many times. Longview on the other had I have only been through a few times. Used to have family in Sherveport (sp) and do have in-laws in Texarkana.

You know what I like most about Texas Melody, the people in Texas have a sense of humor. Here in CA everyone is too PC to tell a good joke or get a good joke. CA is much too serious about stuff.

Now the question is are you a Red Raider???

JL
Anyone,

You said something in one of your posts that made me think you were from Brisbane. Am I close?? It is a beautiful city as are many of the cities in Aust.

"Ya just gotta love the South!"
I'm from the same state as Kayla Andy

I have lived in Colorado - Durango

Alberta - Both Calgary, and Edmonton.

Nevada - Indian Springs - but I was only 2 years old.

Hawaii - Island of Molokai

My son lived in Houston, but I never visited him while he lived there. I drove across northern Texas once, but don't know if I will again, life is too short.

Thanks to MB, I have friends all over the world. Hope to meet 'em all some day.

SS

I grew up in San Antonio, Texas and now live in Corpus Christi, Texas.
ML:

Touched a nerve with the remark about dividing Alaska in half?

BTW, I'm from Jawja (Georgia) and we are NOT yankees here! We like our grits, sweet tea, and boiled peanuts just fine, thank you.

I lived in Dallas for a couple of years and had close relatives near Kilgore for a few years and in Seminole (an hour from Lubbock, an hour from Midland/Odessa) for a few years. Liked Dallas fine, hated those tumbleweeds, dust storms, and stinky oil wells.
Well, I've been in Maryland now for about 16 years, so I guess that's where I'm from now.

But I still consider myself a "Hoosier by birth, but Boilermaker by the grace of God!"

I think we're kind of embarrassed and a little too proud for our own good, to tell you the truth.

But hey, I *married* a yankee, so I'm pretty open minded
MISSISSIPPI! A True Suthuna

Hi to Susan in Miss, and to every one else. This is my first post!

Living in Vermont past 11 years (but still haven't come to terms with the horribly cold winters yet...). I'll be moving back to my parents' soon for Plan B or D, haven't figured that out yet...they are right outside of Philadelphia.
East Texas Piney woods

I LOVE yankees, "you guys"!!!!!!!!!!! When my yankee relatives used to visit us when we were kids we teased back and forth the intire visit.

I can just hear him teasing them and saying, "If any of "YA'LL" die while you're down here, we'll just send you home in a shoebox".................meaning he knew what they were "full of".
The "he" in the above post was my Dad.
Originally from Illinois, and that's what I still claim as home...even though I've been exiled to the land of seagulls and polygamists for quite some time now....I'd tell you the name, but it's a four letter word.

Oscar
OK Oscar, I live in the same state as you, only I live way down south in Dixie.
(that ought to confuse everyone)

I work with a yankee woman from Pennsylvania and I love to drive her crazy with our "Georgian" saying of "I'm fixing to leave, fixing to go to lunch, etc etc". It drives her insane!!!

Examples would be:

"oh for cute..." or "Oh for special.." or my favorite "Oh for cripes sake!" Only in Minnesota.
As a "yankee woman" who lived in Oklahoma for awhile -

I loved the way they talked, but it took me forever to figure out what they were saying. They drop half the letters in the middle of words and change to "oor" sound to "er".

For example I was a bartender and the first night I worked I couldn't understand when they were asking me for a Coors. "Gimme a kers, plaze" A what? All night long. I know they thought I was dim witted.
My boss's wife went out to San Francisco (from Mississippi) several years ago. She asked the waiter at the hotel restaurant for a Tab...the nasty diet soft drink. He had her repeat her request several times before he understood her.

He said he'd never heard the word "Tab" pronounced with so many syllables.

Love that Southern draaawwwwaalll.

lol...we do tend to add syllables to those one syllable words!!!! H and I used to live in UTAH when he was in the air force. The people that I worked with were absolutely fascinated just to listen to me talk ! They had some strange words for things to such as elastics for rubber bands.
I have to sometimes ask my H if I've said something "Southern" or not. After 9 years he's pretty much laughed the more embarrassing phrases and pronunciations out of my vocabulary. The latest, a couple of years ago, was acorn. I pronounced it "A krn" rather than "A korn".

He also thinks "t" past tense forms are weird - burnt, learnt, etc.
Yes, that was it too - drawing out the words, so they go on forever.

We need more Southerners up here in this frozen tundra I live in, even if just to warm it up a bit.
I'm originally from Delaware, so I don't really speak "southern"...or so I'm told.

The Southern-ism of H's that just drives me nuts is "ow-chunder". That's the Mississippi way of saying "out yonder", which is country enough already.

My MIL thinks I've ruined H and my kids, because they all say "soda". Down here every soft drink is a Coke.

Speaking of southern expressions....

First, although I currently live in Maryland, I was born, raised, and educated in Va. Lived in Woodstock, Ga. and Charlotte and Wilmington, NC as an adult. So I have southern roots.

My favorite southern expression - more a story than a pronunciation - is the "turtle on a fence post," as in, "now, he's a turtle on a fence post ifn' there ever was one."

When I use that up here, I get blank looks, "Huh?"

"Ya know, the one definite thing you can conclude when you see a turtle on a fence post is, you have no idea how it got up there, but you can shur bet it had some hep (help)."
