I come to you today with a sad heart. I have recently found out that MSchluter has cancer. Cindy told my H that he has a DNR in place & he is not doing well. It looks as though he might not last the week. I'm at a loss for words right now. My heart is breaking. For those that know Mike, he is one special guy. And he has always stayed the course for his M, his kids & Cindy. They have made such strides in their M & have come to a place that Mike dreamed of for a long time. They are very happy together right now & the love Cindy has for Mike is very evident in the way that she speaks & the things she's doing for him in his time of need.

Could we please band together to emit prayers for this family? The family's going to need a lot of prayer to cover them during this time & Michael will truly be missed by everyone here I'm sure.

I am sitting here in tears right now. The last time my H spoke to Mike was a few weeks ago. He had called him to get him set up for an online game they play together. He called Adam & said, "Pick up the phone, [censored]!!" and then started laughing. I wish now I would have saved that little bit of his voice on the answering machine. I just wish there was more we could do but being in a different state is hard.

That's the thing about acquiring internet friends. We get so attached & being in a different state, sometimes we don't even get to see their faces, but the love shines through the screen.

Don't know Mike's relationship with Christ, but it sure sounds like God has been merciful to him and his wife and is waiting to welcome him into His arms.

There is no doubt that this is a very difficult time for Cindy and the children, and I pray that having already experienced the love and mercies of God that they will continue to feel His love and comfort throughout this time.

It is with a heavy heart that I write this post.

In this life (and that beyond), you'll never have to side step a mirror afraid to see the man in reflection. When I think of "guts", "integrity", "love" "committment"....I think of you. I see a man who fought the good fight, and stood up to life's worst, took the punch on the jaw like a man, and survived.

Everyone in this life has people who make indelible impressions on them (good or bad).....you are one of those people to me.

What do you as some family guy with children, who smokes too much, and lives in New York, have to do with a single, workaholic divorced trauma surgeon like me.....what??????? If only people knew (large grin..and smile).

I am not gonna pray for a miracle for you.....no need to. God already granted your family that wish.

As you leave this life now, be calm, be strong, be yourself and face it like you have everything else in your life......Be ready for next life....you'll have all the answers.......

This is profoundly (don't know the best word) spiritual, painful, memorable time of year. Too personal for words - not my husband but a father of a young man I have mentored since he was 11 years old.

Last Sunday this young man's mother taught a lesson in church - she talked about adversity and trials. And she said that she never knew that a person could go through trials like that and still be happy. But she is happy. Genuinely happy.

Michael and Cindy - your miracle has already happened on one level. There are other miracles to come.

Per the family's instructions, I am posting an update about Michael. Thanks Dorry for bumping the thread. Sorry I haven't been posting updates, but it's been quite hectic. I have spoken with Cindy a lot recently & she is quite a mess understandably. It's been very nice to see this outpouring of prayers for Mike & the family. I am going to give Cindy this link so she can read the thoughts & prayers when she can find the time.

Michael is in the hospital right now. He is doing better, but not quite there yet. He has a 60% chance of survival. This is an improvement however, from the 20% chance given a few days ago. What a miracle! He has to gain weight & strength before they can go to the next phase of treatment which would be radiation treatment on the main mass of his lungs. He is on meds but he is coherent sometimes, so if anyone wishes to send him a message, please let me know via e-mail, [email]thirteenyrs@yahoo.com.[/email]

My H & I would like to start a fund for the family. My H has a penpal account & he is going to see how you go about setting up a donation link. I'll post more about that when I have more information. I haven't had the pleasure of speaking with either Mike or Cindy but reading this thread I see how much they are loved and how hard they fought for their marriage. Now a miracle is occuring and Mike is fighting to give hmself the chance he so deserves.

Today is my birthday and my 11th Wedding Anniversary, before I go and celebrate I wanted to check in on this thread. I am very humbled by Mike and Cindy's strength and hope my thoughts, prayers and best wishes can be felt all the way from the UK.

I spoke w/Cindy just a little while ago. She asked me to post an update to all of you. Michael's condition has not changed much. He is still in the hospital, on medication & only wakes up every now & again. They're not sure if he even recognizes anyone or anything. He cannot speak right now.

Every single one of you have touched in me a place I forgot was there and through my husbands Love and Dedication he was able to win me back but in truth he always had me I just needed to find the light again.

I printed off all of these letters and took them with me to read while watching Michael rest.

it was about three hours into all of this that I realized I had a notebook with all of the printed letters from here. I sat down and started to read but found that I was reading these out loud to my husband, Jim looked at me as I read these and so did my husbands father but after about the 10 minutes I noticed my husband was looking at me as I cried reading these wonderful loving letters. I had to stop because I was just to upset to continue and Michaels Father picked up the letters and continued. By the time these were finished and read all of us were in tears even the nurse who stood in the doorway. I know that i was the wayward wife but all of you reminded me that my husband still has that sparkle in his eye. Michael is being held for another two weeks because of some blood work they did.

I want to thank all of you from the bottom of my heart. And from My husbands family who are all Military they also thank you for opening a door to a world they knew nothing about. My husband was a Soldier and a fine Officer while he served and because of your kind words you made us all realize that he still is the same man we all love.

I wish I could stop crying so I could finsih this but I can't and so I will end this letter here.

Update 1/24/06 from Cindy

Michael is still in the hospital. He has lost weight rapidly. He went from 145 to 83 lbs in just a short while. He needs to gain this weight back before they can progress further in his treatment. Once he gains his weight back, he can be released from the hospital & try to start eating solid foods again.

We have found that the best thing he can eat (that he can hold down) are power bars. The really high calorie ones that are nutritious for you. These seem to work really well. The goal is to get him up to a weight of 120 so the doctors can start radiation treatment.

This thread has been read to Michael last night. He had looked at Cindy & had tears in his eyes. He is fighting for his life & the specialist has said that he doesn't know where this strength is coming from. That he should have been gone by now. I know it's from all the outpouring of concern & prayers that he is still with us. Michael is one strong man & a born fighter. He fought for our country, he fought for his marriage, he fought for his own personal recovery & he is now fighting for his own life. Cindy has also fought as well. All of us are testament to the mighty struggle Cindy has had to face & is now proving that she loves this man whom she married so many years ago by being there for his every need, spending 16 hours & more right by his side, being his strength as well. Cindy, when you read this, please know that everyone of us on MB is proud of you. You have fought the good fight & continue to do so.

Michael, please know that you are well loved by everyone on this board who has gotten to know you. We have seen you struggle, picked you up when you were down, talked you out of some crazy schemes & supported you in your decision to make your M work. last week, a wonderful man and opthomologist and also a patient of mine came in to have another "how's my cancer doin" checkup. Nobody gave him much hope last year apparently. he's since begun singing in his church choir w/his beloved wife of over fifteen years...and is a wonderful dad to their adopted kids.

he's a shining man...who incidentally had a wife leave him many years ago...and that experience shaped him into the incredible man, doc, and dad he is today.

he had a huge tumor on his lower pelvis. really large.

after performing his exam...I had to blink. I on one computer screen pulled up his last exam...and then on the other opposing screen, his present exam.

it was a miracle...along with some great prayer, AWESOME MEDICINE, and a good anticancer diet...

tumor is gone BUH BYE...

the man saw the incredibly surprised look on my face. he was wondering if it was either really bad news or really good news...I had to smile. the man got tears in his eyes. when I reviewed the case w/the doc, the doc said same thing about this other fellow medical friend of ours...he said "wow. I guess sometimes miracles happen a bit" his cancer was on the run!

so it seems that miracles can and do happen.

we're behind you all the way.

remember...goood diet...lots of veggies when you can eat em, organically grown veggies, (doc friend did macrobiotic diet w/ensure shakes)...and he's done awesome. drank lots of green tea (antioxidant) and such. and keep getting a great help from a great doc.

and pray. and sing when you can.

that's what my patient/friend did.

and we're ready to hear the miracle.

8. I'm crying.

When my favorite uncle was dying I flew back to help care for him. One thing I made for him to eat he really loved.

Ensure frozen into popsicles. That stuff tastes nasty, but frozen into popsicles he used to eat half of one, with gusto. Lots of nourishment.

Michael sat up on his own today!!!! <img src="/ubbt/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> Such good news. However, it's still a long road he has to face. The meds are making him quite incoherent (understandbly). His rate of survival in all of this is less than 15%. We need to get that # up. He has been responding to reading this thread, so let's see if we can continue the positive thoughts. His weight is the biggest concern right now. He really needs to get this up. When he looked at Cindy, he didn't seem to recognize her. That just shook Cindy to the core. His voice might not even return. So far he's been making sounds, but nothing solid. So let's pray for that as well. I know inside he wants to communicate. It's so hard being he's going through so much turmoil right now. I just pray he can survive this phase so he can progress to the next phase. Lord, please perform a miracle for this family. They need it badly. As always, in Your will.

my grandma beat a horrid stroke...it slowed her up a little...but here's her little secret. when people ask how she did it she says, "I WAS MORE STUBBORN THAT IT WAS".

and remember...chemo/radiation kills healthy tissues as well as cancerous ones. that's why you gotta keep yourself up. eat right. give healthy tissues a chance to fight back.

had a pet scan yet for staging? does your hospital do pet scans? we do this in my profession. metabolic imaging basically.

Update 1/31/06

Prayers do get answered!!! Michael's throat cancer is GONE!!!!! Hallelujah!!!! <img src="/ubbt/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> However, he's not out of the woods yet. He is getting a bed sore from laying so much so exercise will be important. But, it's kind of a catch 22. He is too weak to get out of bed. His weight is continually dropping. Per the doctor, this is probably due to the medication he's on. They are going to try a different med, unsure of the name, to see if that works. He is alert, somewhat, but still has trouble talking. The more positive thoughts we can send him the better!!! I believe, with the Lord Almighty's help, & the prayers & positive thoughts that continue to come his way, he is improving. Let's make this miracle happen!

Now, he does have a mass in his lungs. Once he gains his weight, the doctors can concentrate on attacking that. But, the important thing is, that Michael is coming back to us, albeit slowly. Mike, you can do this!!!! We love you & miss you & hope to talk verbally w/you again as soon as possible. And yes, NightStalker does like old men w/no teeth (inside joke MBers). Just some humor for you Mike. We love to hear you laugh, or try to at this stage.

I haven't posted but have prayed for you daily. (+ put you on the nun's prayer list...I work at Catholic hospital)

Change your position as much as possible to relieve pressure from the bedsore site. Your wife can gently massage (not on the wound its self) around the wound and general area to increase blood flow to help healing. Pressure sores take a long time to heal. Good nutrition and hydration is also imprtant.

You will remain in my prayers.

Last month I wrote a letter to my husband and sealed it for him to read when he returned home . I opened the Letter late last night and decided to re-write this letter. After reading through all of your prayers and kind words I feel I should put my letter to my husband on here. A place he believes in and filled with people that know and love him.

You were always a strong person in spirit and I wanted to write this letter to you many times but never had the courage, So today I decided to sit down and put my feelings in a place you believe in.Do you remember the first time we met? It was in early October and you were home on leave visiting your family,I was across the street helping my Aunt clean her yard and I rememeber just how handsome you looked in your uniform. Do you remember walking across the street and hugging my Aunt? My Aunt introduced us and you winked at me and at that very moment you owned my heart and soul.

The day we were married was the most wonderful day of my life. This coming Febuary 12th will be are 12th year together. I keep hoping you will be home on our 12th anniversary it's a day I want to share with you and let you know just how much you have given me over the years.

You always found strength in places I never looked and you always found faith where I always saw none. I can still see the tears in your eyes from all of the hurt I caused you and I'll never forget the words you spoke to me the day you confronted me with my lies. You told me that you will always be here for me and that this event will never change a promise made.

For some reason my mind takes me back to so many events in our life together. I still see that look in your eyes the first time you held our Daughter and I can hear the words you spoke so softly in her ear, You told her that you will always be there for her and that no being will come between you and your princess. You left four day's later for some far away country not able to tell me where or even why. As the years went on you left many times and soon you were leaving behind not just me but our three children. I never told you this but I was always proud of who you were. You were always our Soldier and my Hero.I loved you so much and today that love is even stronger. You never gave up on me not once, you believed in me.Michael you were always the strongest and you always made me feel safe. Now its my turn.

Cody sleeps on your side of the bed and tells me that he is keeping your side of the bed warm and he won't let anyone drink out of your coffee cup. He sleeps with your Army shirt.

I wish I could say I sleep but I don't, I lie awake most nights thinking of us and how much we need you here with us. I pray every night at your bedside. I know you want to give up and I hope that my being there for you gives you the strength you need. You have so many people that love you and need you.

Just wanted to let all of you know that this is the end for Michael. When he is on his medication, he improves. But he had to be taken off 2 of them b/c he just cannot afford them & plus, he wants it this way. He & Cindy just want his pain to end. It looks like he will not reach the weight he needed to gain in order to go to the next phase of treatment. He is not doing well at all.

It is so hard to watch a friend slowly deteriorate. I can imagine Cindy's pain & the children. Michael seems to be at peace. He has grown such a love for the Lord & I have no doubt that he will be one of God's soldiers when he enters those pearly gates.

We all love you dearly, Michael.

What sad sad news. I will say a prayer for his family. TT

My heart breaks for you both, but I also celebrate Mike's soon to be homecoming with The Lord. Cindy, your love for him and how you have been caring for him is a true model of love to us all. My prayers, (and if I could be there) my hugs to you both and your children.

Go in peace Mike. You are about to join a much greater Army than you could have ever imagined. Just remember the Lord is will be waiting on you there.

Hi WOL. Mike is going to the next phase of treatment despite his weight loss. The specialist is going to try anyway. I just pray it does some good. Both of their faiths are shaky right now so they could use some prayers. Thanks.

Sorry I didn't see this before. Mike is doing well as of right now. He has his good days & his bad days but the experimental drug the drs tried has been working. I'll tell him you asked about him if you want. Thanks for asking. He'll appreciate the positive thoughts.

Oh ST! Thank you and praise God! I was afraid to ask. Tell him he will continue to be in my prayers and that I said "hi"

Thanks to everyone who continues to pray for Mike's recovery. He has been given a 2nd chance w/his life. He still gets sick occasionally & is currently on meds, but he is working now 10 hrs a week & the dr's say he might be able to go back to work fulltime next year. And also, the best news of all -- Cindy is expecting a baby!

To all of you who think that marital recovery is impossible, just have a look at this story of theirs & you'll just see the miracle unfold before your eyes. Don't give up hope!!!!

GOD'S grace is wondeful is it not? Prayers to all involved!!
