I'm probably going to come across as TOTALLY naive here, but our Myspace discussion the other day got me wondering. A few people mentioned it as a place for hookups, etc. and that made me curious.

I always looked at it as a fun "toy", so to speak, and not much else. My 9 Myspace friends are H, my sister, and 7 other people that I already know. My sister is fanatical about uploading pics from family events (Her birthday party ended 10 hours ago, and she already has 34 pictures uploaded! Kid is FAST.) I read my friends updates and blog posts, etc. Just...a fun thing.

But I honestly don't get...how do people use it for hookups? I don't see any way or reason to hook up with new people. Does it have some kind of networking feature to meet people? Maybe I haven't looked around it closely enough, but that all just mystified me.

I believe how it works (so my son says) is that when you are looking at your friends myspace page, you can see their friends. You may not know one of them but they look appealing to you visually. So, you click on their page and request to be their friend. Once they agree, assuming they do, you then have access to all of their friends. This opens up yet another group of unknows that you can request friendship from. The possibilities are endless as you can begin to collect hundreds of people. Because lots are friends of friends, it's very possible they will be in your general area.
Hope this helps.

I know that you can do searches for people with similar interests or you can use the Browse function to find people in your area.

Or they can do like Fiori said and kind of piggyback from one person's friends list to the next. We had a guy at our last base trying to meet up with military wives that way. My friend had to get a restraining order against him. I believe the guy eventually got "set up" a couple times by husband/wife teams and eventually learned his lesson. I'm not a big fan of violence, but can't bring myself to disapprove of it in his case.

My H did alot of mischief on adult friend finder and he had some of the women send their MYSpace acct. and then he'd be able to see a bit more of them and their personalities that way. If he liked what he saw about their hobbies and personality, then he'd pursue them.
I have a MySpace acct. but for the reason of 'visiting' with a friend. She convinced me to sign up because her son set her up and she thought we could keep in contact better. I hardly ever visit the site. The police in our area monitor the site regularly tho. They have gotten more than a few arrests by doing this. Many young people think nothing of sharing blogs regarding vandalism, etc. and the police are able to get clues to criminal activity.

I have an account too. I use it to keep track of my 16 and 13 year olds. I look at their sites randomly and make them remove anything I find even remotely offensive or inappropriate.

there's also a feature on your profile that you can list that you are looking for dates or serious relationships. I'm sure you can search for people with that in their profiles too.

the problem with myspace is it's free and relatively unmonitored

dating sites cost money and are heavily monitored. harder to be up to no good and less attractive to those kinds of people
