I've been lurking for some time.....and I thought that this was just a fluke.

BUT......I've re-visited several times to make sure it wasn't from some other place I might be visiting and it keeps happening.

Pop Up Ads for seeking love when I get to the forums main page. There are several....but loveseeking.com seems to be the one that pops up most often.

Now....is this really place for that? I think not.

Anybody else getting these popping up?

The only pop ups I've gotten are for some crazy spy camera. I beleive it may be a good idea to inform the moderators about these other pop ups like loveseeking.com for they have no place in a forum like this one.

I would hazard to say that you have some sort of spyware on your computer that is causing these popups. Or it could be a cookie placed on your machine by another site.

At any rate, I don't see the Harley's accepting sponsorship from a dating service. I don't think there are any sponsers for this site. Not to my knowledge anyway.

Try clearing your internet history and cookies. It it still happens, do a search for a program called "Adaware". There is a free version that you can install that will scan your computer for spyware and give you the opportunity to delete it.

The only popup window I've ever gotten here is when you first load the main page at www.marriagebuilders.com. The one that lets you enter your email address for newsletters and updtates.

high_road,

Thanks for the suggestions.....but there is no spyware on my computer and my cookies have been deleted. That is one of the things I did before re-visiting to make sure it wasn't coming from anywhere else.

It doesn't have to be sponsorship.....I was just wondering if maybe the site itself hadn't been tampered with.

I haven't had any pop-ups. It could be your internet service provider's pop-ups. I'll forward your post to Admin.

I would ditto on the spyware. You can download free demo versions that will check for trojans, adware and spyware on your computer. Go to shareware.com and look for adware or spyware. Also if you have a good firewall like zonealarm, it can block popups and such.

You can go to Alexa.com and download their freeware. It is a great search tool but it also has an adblocker that I find great!

Alexa gives you listings for other websites that are like the website you are looking it which is really nice for research, too.

Miss Priss and others who have this problem,

MB has nothing to do with the content of the pop-ups you're getting. The problem here is a script or a registry entry (I didn't get to the bottom of it yet) that uses "legitimate" pop-ups that MB webmaster incorporated in his design. I do remember that the pop-up contained Steve's picture and some info, but now has been substituted with this parasite pop-up.

I could not get rid of it permanently, though was able to eliminate the content from being displayed. It pops up but shows the error message 401 "Page not found".

Here is what you can do:

Search for a file called "hosts" (no quotes) on your hard drive. Open it with Notepad and add the following line "127.0.0.1 www.loveseeking.com (DON'T CLICK ON THIS) " (no quotes) after the "127.0.0.1 localhost" (no quotes).

The file now should look like this (between the dotted lines):

------------------------------
127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.0.1 www.loveseeking.com
------------------------------

Save the file, restart your machine and test. You will still get the pop-up <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="images/icons/confused.gif" /> , but it won't display that horibble message it carries. What modifying the "hosts" file does, it makes the computer think that the website is local and it shouldn't bother finding it on the internet (this is a lame explanation of what actually happens <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="images/icons/grin.gif" /> ). You can add any website you want (or don't want should I say) to the "hosts" file and it will never get displayed. Just to give you an idea, I have more than 1400 entries in my "hosts" file and growing <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="images/icons/grin.gif" /> .

P.S.

Sometimes the pop-up will come from a site other than the one you're trying to block. In this case you have to find out where the pop-up comes from. Try the steps above first and if it doesn't work, I will add the additional steps that you have to take.

Thanks for reading,

BigStar

The legit MB popup occurs on the homepage. I think the original post said this one was comingi up when accessing the main forum page. I've never happened across a popup on the main forum page.

Here is a great site to check for addware/spyware http://www.spywareinfo.com/xscan.php

Do you have any mucic download programs on your computer?? Kazza and the likes? They come with a program called gator that is adware. There are so may out there. GMT, Clientman, ezula, there is a weather thing too. If you uninstall them, somehow (maybe in your cookies) they reinstall (somehow, I am not a pc geek) under a different name. You have to get someone who knows what they are doing to get them out of your registry.
Hope this helps... D
BTW... I don't get popups from this site (only the legit one on the homepage)

high_road,

You're right, Miss Priss says it pops up when she gets to the forum page. There could be a delay however. In any case it shouldn't matter where it's triggered from. If you change the "hosts" file, it will get rid of the content.

So far, no program I used could remove the parasite pop-ups, only the method described above. I must research it to find out how it works in order to find a permanent remedy. I didn't do it because I was satisfied with the "hosts" file solution. You know, the quick fix/patch/bandaid type of deal <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="images/icons/grin.gif" /> .

Just to let everyone know........I'm pretty darned computer savvy....so........

There is NO spyware on my computer. I do not use an ad blocker because I design web sites and I need to see that they are working for my clients....I actually don't mind them....but some just seem out of place in certain places....like the one I've seen popping up here.

I wasn't complaining about the pop up....as I've always gotten one.....just complaining about the new content.

Now.....I'm with BigStar on this one.

I did what you said....and it worked.
I got an Asteroids Advertisment tonight. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="images/icons/smile.gif" />
Ditto Date.com and Match.com pop up all the time.

At one time the Gator software had made it into my computer but even after I got rid of it the dating service line pop ups kept coming.

I think its the way the pop up companies spy on certain websites. On the Georgia Lottery webiste an online gambling casino has a regular pop up and I am quite sure the state lottery website isn't promoting the competition. And the conservatives clearly do not want to look like the state is promoting gambling other than the lottery.

I am glad it worked for you Miss Priss.

I looked for the cause of it, but the buggers who put this marver together really knew what they were doing. It's pretty clever and complicated, but I have an idea of how it's done.

I will let everybody know how to get rid of it permanently as soon as I get to the root of it. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="images/icons/wink.gif" />

I no longer get any pop-up ads since I switched my browser from Internet Explorer to Mozilla Firebird. Wellll.....I didn't do it....my smarty-pants daughter did this for me and I am eternally grateful to her.

I had installed a pop-up stopper when I used Explorer and it was such a hassle when I needed to view a link within a web site because I had to disable the stopper and then enable once more to stop the spam. Not only that, there are some ads that will filter through the stopper which drives a sane person crazy.

Needless to say, I am a happy camper insofar as my browser is concerned. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="images/icons/grin.gif" />

GeezLouise......good to see you.

I don't post very often anymore.....only when I think my personal opinion is helpfull...and well.....some just don't like it so I decided to lay low.

Just wanted to say HI <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="images/icons/grin.gif" />
