Divorce of parents is ranked up there with Getting Married, Unwed Pregnancy, and death of parent.

For adults - its number 2 between death of a spouse and marital separation.

Score of 300+: At risk of illness

With the loss of my job last week (47 pts.) coupled with my separation (65 pts.) and pending divorce (73 pts.) I'm about ready to start taking my temperature. Oh, it's only 185 degrees...

It doesn't say anything about stress reducers, however. I am staying physically active (running, biking, yard work, etc.), cooking my own meals and going to a lot of meetings. They all have to count for something.

Because I don't feel sick...

Well from September 2006 to June 2007 I had:

Death of Mother (63)
Marital Separation (65)
Divorce (73)
Child Left Home (29)
Major mortgage (32)
Change in financial state (38)
Change in responsibilities at work (29)

and (snicker) Christmas (12)

Total 329 (There may be bonus points because this was only 9-months)

That is assuming that changes in sleep, eating, etc. are pre-rolled into divorce and marital separation stress.


It is interesting that Adultery of Spouse is not an independent stress factor. It does not necessarily lead to divorce or separation.

But if you add up all the stress factors from the chart that frequently accompany adultery you get the mother of all stresses.

At a minimum Adultery could consist of all of the following sub-stresses:

Sexual difficulties (39)
Change in frequency of arguments (35)
Trouble with in-laws (29)
Change in living conditions (25)
Revision of personal habits (24)
Change in recreation (19)
Change in church activities (19)
Change in social activities (18)
Change in sleeping habits (16)
Change in eating habits (15)

Total: 239 (call an ambulance)

I just want to say that the stress involved with all the math required for this stress scale is stressing me out....is that a bad sign??

I got 663 and I'm as healthy as a horse. But I'm going to check into getting some more life insurance, just in case..............

not sure I buy into the math but I do buy in the fact that divorce of a parent is much more stressful to kids than we are led on to believe.
