Anyone that has gone down this route, help me out here..........Thants
If you have been married for 10 yrs., you are entitled to half of his S.S. whether still married, separated, or divorced.

If separation is the direction you are going you should get a consultation with an attorney to get a better understanding of your rights.
But, I think that also may depend on your age. I don't think you can collect until you reach retirement age. A simple call to the Social Security office will answer those questions. That number is in the blue federal government section close to the front of the phone book.
You can do a search on Google that will bring up the laws regarding divorce and settlements in Florida.
This might answer some of your questions!

Lefty,
This is a copy of my reply to you on the In Recovery thread:

Lefty,
This is from the Social Security web site.

Benefits For A Divorced Spouse

A divorced spouse can get benefits on a former husband’s or wife’s Social Security record if the marriage lasted at least 10 years. The divorced spouse must be 62 or older and unmarried. If the spouse has been divorced at least two years, he or she can get benefits, even if the worker is not retired. However, the worker must have enough credits to qualify for benefits and be age 62 or older. The amount of benefits a divorced spouse gets has no effect on the amount of benefits a current spouse can get.
