The Star Spangled Banner

O say can you see by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming,
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there;
O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave,
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On the shore dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines in the stream:
'Tis the star-spangled banner, O! long may it wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion,
A home and a country, should leave us no more?
Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps' pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave,
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

O thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved home and the war's desolation.
Blest with vict'ry and peace, may the Heav'n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: "In God is our trust."
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!
Apparently you could have had a turkey as your national animal, but the bald eagle won over in the end.

Do you eat bald eagles on the fourth, or is it turkey?

Have a wonderful day all!!!
There is an exhibition at the British Museum here in London over the summer, displaying your Declaration of Independence document and our nearest equivalent, the Magna Carta. Y'all should come over and see it!

This post gets made every year - is everyone in your country so forgetful and needs to be reeducated about American traditions once a year!

For the record, we bought extra fireworks today to save for the fifth of November. We actually teach our kids a little bit about your country! :P
Remember, remember
The fifth of November
And the gunpowder treason
And plot

I can think of no reason
The gunpowder treason
Should ever be
Forgot
We Americans won't be available this evening, Sugarcane. We are doing some secret things tonight!!

Blowing ourselves up for the entertainment of family members...
Yep! After our fireworks we sit around and watch movies about how we kicked the British foreign devils out! Watching "The Revolutionary War" right now. laugh
The colonies win in the Revolutionary War had more to due with Benjamin Franklin's successful diplomacy with the French than anything else. The British considered us to be their possession until the War of 1812. We didn't win that war directly, either. It was the fact that it was a domestic public relations disaster for the British. The British citizenry was appalled at the news of the burning of Washington.
Happy (belated) 4th everybody. I graduated college on 4th July and felt they should have had fireworks for me!

Accidentally hit submit.... oh well... good enough.

Remember, there are two types of countries those who have never walked on the moon, and 'Murrica.

Know why there are no Knock Knock jokes about 'Murrica?

Cause freedom rings.

And, finally... belatedly....
