Hi all,ML told me to jump on here and give a little incite to VAR setup,"hiding that sucker".If you search for my thread you can read my story, and how i used a VAR to finally find out the truth.
You need to check local laws, but in my desperation i had to find out what the WW was planning,as i was in a complete roadblock for info.
I used an Olympic 700 unit, get it at bestbuy etc,i used the lithium batteries as they last longer,in HQ mode it can run with voice activation for well over 86 hours, usually all the discussions are in a vehicle, its convenient, there are no interruptions,no one to overhear you.
Under the seat with Velcro works well, the problem is if they drop something under the seat,it could be seen,in the case of a chevy trailblazer, the forward portion of the center console worked, one screw pull flap velcro unit to backside, set rec mode, reinstall screw, and let the birdie sing.
It was a bit touch and go during driving as road noise was excessive, but you can still make out the conversation.parked look out,you can even hear the other end of the phone.
If the time and date are set on the VAR,you have a complete log,as i did, even knew what time they met,and if you can map his/her route to work, well,i knew she was stopping to pick him up in the AM..

Send me some questions..im no expert but i did alot of research

Edsway,

I wonder if a thin strip of foam behind the var would help cancel the road noise?

foam may work, but remember Velcro acts like a cushion too,an external mike will be better, hide the VAR up under dash, run external mic with long enough cable close and under steering column, usually the vehicle steering column is covered with a rubber or plastic type housing, the mic is small enough to hide on top, even if someone were to search it would be very difficult to find. What i looked at is ease of access,to get ahold of the VAR as quick as possible in case you were spotted during install or getting it out. {Would be awkward to have WW/WH come out and your under the dash}.
