Speaking of porn, there was another email to the radio show today about a crippled marriage due to porn. It comes up every week. Sometimes several times.

It's not due to porn. It's because of a person who can't handle porn.

Dr. Harley disagrees with you. But that's ok. smile

I wonder if Dr. Harley blames guns for murder, rather than the people pulling the trigger?

But that misses the point. I agree with your point to a small degree that it depends on what the person does with that, but that does not take into the account the contrast effect. That effect doesn't exist in your analogy with guns which negates your analogy. Porn is harmful to marriages, period. If you want to know why it is harmful, the Harleys explain it in these radio clips [these are just 2 among hundreds about how bad porn is]

I can only be "genteel" for so long.

Let's make this REAL easy K71:

Most women despise the fact that men spend time looking at (to say nothing of satisfying perverse needs for sexual release by employing) pornographic images, re-creations, and depictions.

Now given your history, how remarkably obtuse DOES one have to be to continue a practice which reduces the odds of attracting, and forming a union with, a large sector of the available mates out there? Or, having formed such a union, puts it at risk of damage by continuing such activities?

Personally, my goal each day is not to do anything which would incent my bride to think (or say), "My husband is a slimeball, and cares not about my opinions enough to stop doing something I find disgusting!"

But maybe I'm overly sensitive....

Agree 100%. Having a husband who slobbers over porn while slapping the salami in front of a computer is about as disgusting as it gets. It reminds me of some pimply face slobbering perv who can't get a real woman so he has to resort to being a creep. It is creepy and revolting. BLECH! puke

The giant, gaping hole in your asinine argument is that nobody here is suggesting banning porn or implementing "porn control"

The onus is on the individual to NOT view it.

Your logic is flawed.

"What cripples marriages? Porn or the person using porn?" Cannot be compared to the question "What kills people? Guns or the person pulling the trigger?" You must assume that porn is morally neutral, the same way the gun is morally neutral. It is not. The camera would be the morally neutral item in the porn industry -- it's really the only thing you can compare to the gun. "What ruins marriages? The camera or the porn the camera shot?" is the equivalent argument to the gun analogy.

Insisting that porn doesn't cripple a marriage, but rather it's the person who can't handle porn that cripples the marriage is a very poor argument. And it can be used to justify just about anything.
"What cripples marriages? Porn or the person using porn?"
"What cripples marriages? Abuse or the person who is abusing?"
"What cripples lives? Rape or the person who rapes?"

Maritalbliss, that's classic. The "onus" comments made me want to laugh like the one on the left. Huh huh...huhhuhhuh.

I'm big on personal responsibility for one's actions. That's why I never have believed in a "fog" for a WS, but that's for another topic.

Agree... But it's not just porn.

Men are bombarded with sexual images everywhere and I think it has a harmful effect on society.

There is a christian book called "Every Man's Battle" I haven't read it. But from what I've heard it addresses this bombardment, the effects on marriage and how men can win the war of sexual temptation.

Has anyone read it?

Here's a link to Amazon.
