All,
I was thinking that we might skip December since there are holidays and everyone is busy. However Dv, A and problem are 24x7 issues <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="images/icons/frown.gif" /> .
I heard everyone want going hiking and J.R would organize it. We assigned it to him since he bailed so many times. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Razz]" src="images/icons/tongue.gif" /> .
J.R. ... this is your gig, take it over <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="images/icons/grin.gif" />
My request are not on Sunday & alternative plan if it is raining. We have a few that run iron-man but definitly I am too domesticated already, rain would bring cold to me <img border="0" title="" alt="[Embarrassed]" src="images/icons/blush.gif" /> . Last Saturday of the year ?

Ha, yes my bad for bailing last couple of times... active lifestyle and all!
If December is out, then we're prolly looking at say Jan 10 or 17.
Some options for hikes...
1. Muir Woods - nice easy paved walk, impressive trees, although it can be a little crowded. Afterwards, off to the Pelican Inn for a snack.
2. Mount Diablo summit loop. Sounds hard? Actually it's not much of a hike, but for anyone in the Bay Area who hasn't been here, you're truly missing out. It's been said that the view is only next to Kilimanjaro in terms of the amount of visible land.
3. Mount Tam. Yes there's some hard stuff, but only if you're going down to the beach. If you stay up in the hills, there's some incredible views of the Bay and ocean. Afterwards, snacks at Marin Brewing Company.
4. Brione State Park, East Bay. One of my old haunts, it's got some hills - also some great views of Diablo.
5. Lafayette Reservoir. There's some excellent picnic facilities here and a 2.7 mile paved trail around the reservoir. It's popular, I used to jog out there a lot.
6. Pt. Reyes lighthouse. Best time of year to do something like this would probably be during whale migration - I think that's starting in March.
Votes on dates and locations? I'm going to be gone, taking a winter mountaineering course Jan 24-26.
As for alternates if it's raining... not sure - something in the city?!
And RH, sounds like you've had your hands full lately, too <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="images/icons/wink.gif" /> <small>[ November 30, 2003, 01:25 PM: Message edited by: J.R. ]</small>

I vote for 1/10. 1/17 I have to be at Las Vegas to get hitch ... just kidding <img border="0" title="" alt="[Razz]" src="images/icons/tongue.gif" /> , I have to bring my 2 D to compete for their first major competition of the year.
I could tackle all of those and have no preference on location. If it rains we probably take shelter at Metreon or Santana Row (south bay)
Anyone else ???

Sounds good to me, I suspect this is one thread we'll have to resurrect a little closer to the actual date - that's still a ways off yet!

JR,
Nice choices. Having done all of those hikes a few times, the only issue would be weather. But, for me I will not be able to join you all. Too many family obligations. But, I do like your options.

This sounds like great fun! Any of those options would be great since I've not done any of the them. How would you rank them in terms of difficulty JR? Regarding date, seeing that 1/17 is my b-day, I vote for the 10th.
I will look forward to it!

Personally, I vote we just walk around the fitness track at the San Leandro Marina three times and then spend the afternoon drinking martinis and eating crab dip at Horatio's - but that's just me <g>.
Absent that as a choice:
1. Muir Woods - very crowded, and such a hike for our South Bay friends
2. Mount Diablo summit loop. I like this hike (can you tell I'm not an athlete?) Also, we have a better chance of no rain in the East Bay
3. Mount Tam. - I've only ever gotten to hike on the parts that seem to be straight up and down hill. I'll take your word for it there are some level parts!!
4. Brione State Park, East Bay. - Is this Martinez area? Don't think I've ever done this one.
5. Lafayette Reservoir. - one of my favorite hangouts from high school (a loooooong time ago).
January 10 is good for us too, although I can't commit to anyone else in my family going on a hike!

Hey you guys!
ol' 2long is going 2 be in Sam Frank's Disco (that IS the official name, isn't it?) next Monday night through Thursday afternoon. I'll be where JL's going 2 be, so I 'spect 2 hook up with him and drink his free beers. But any of you all's interested or around on of those evenings?
I realize that SF is hard 2 get in2 and out of if you're not already there, so I won't take offense if nobody can come.
I won't have a car, neither...

Ol' 2L in Fogtown? Cool! I spend most of my time out in the North Bay, but getting into the city is pretty easy - just a drive over the Golden Gate. If you're up for a brew, I could see an impromptu MB IV and a half somewhere easily accessible for ya. Anyone else want to take advantage of such a fine opportunity to meet and greet a 4000+ poster?
Difficulty ratings... I have a hiking book that rates difficulty 1-5 and scenery 1-10. As an example, the Diablo summit loop is 1 & 10. To be honest, I suspect most of these are. The hardest might be Briones and Mt. Tam since they have some hills, maybe 1,000 ft. elevation gains, depending on the choice of trail. But when hiked over enough time, it's not much more than some good exercise! I believe the lighthouse involved a lot of steps - I did that nearly 2 years ago now.
I'm sensing some leanings toward Diablo summit loop, so far...
KS, ya, Briones is very near Martinez. I lived out there for quite a while, up until recently. My STBXW works at UC Davis, and I worked in the city, so she could hop on the train and I'd hop on BART and it took us both roughly an hour or so to make that trip. It seemed a fair compromise at the time.

JR,
I figure you are just one shy guy!!! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Razz]" src="images/icons/tongue.gif" />
But I am game to put on my magstrides, cardio walking shoes and Pi mag water bottle ready to do some serious hiking. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="images/icons/shocked.gif" /> <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="images/icons/wink.gif" />
I like Muir Woods and T1 has never been there. So even if it is a touristy place it may be nice in Jan.
However, I am not the hiking expert and gotta watch out for my 'ol bones. So be nice to this ol gal and pick an easy but fun place, ok? Something with a view and some brew! ;d
Either week in Jan will do for us. At least for now.

Hey 2L,
I suspect you and Mr. JL are chickening out but that's ok. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="images/icons/wink.gif" />
You will have to just imagine what the Bay Area gang look like. LOL!! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="images/icons/shocked.gif" /> <img border="0" title="" alt="[Razz]" src="images/icons/tongue.gif" /> <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="images/icons/grin.gif" />
By the time you finally will get to see us, we will be all buff and fit (after JR's Jan hike). Either a few pounds lighter or much shorter - <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="images/icons/shocked.gif" /> Hm.... I can't afford getting shorter so it had better be getting lighter. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="images/icons/grin.gif" />
Sorry you couldn't make it. I am quite happy to hear the lilt in your postings again. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="images/icons/wink.gif" />
No hard feelings U 4k poster U, L.

Lilt?
Over here, that used 2 be something you women of the female persuasion used 2 put in your hair. But my D brought some cans of Lilt home from across the pond, and then DRANK them!
Thanks for the observation, though! If it ain't lilt, maybe it's Brilcreme, Butch Wax, Score, or Dipity Do! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="images/icons/grin.gif" />

My vote is for the Bay Area version of Mt. Kilimanjaro. Do I need hiking boots?
I'm likely to be around this Christmas season - I don't know if I can afford to rent another car to go see my family. I might be stuck in the City...so if anyone else is bored, give me a call.
There are other things to do besides the metreon...We could go play pool at the Great Entertainer (not far from the Metreon). They're open late, have a full bar, and a menu...it's cheaper than Jillian's at the Metreon, which also has pool. Only drawback is that it isn't kid friendly.

LULU, for Mt.Diablo, hiking boots are definitely optional. It's possible to drive within about 50 feet of the very top where they've got a visitor center - we might have to park one lot lower to make it any kind of effort at all.
Pool - that was something RH and I did downtown quite a while back now - fun idea, though - anyone up for that?
