Do you know how to make shusi ? ... there are plenty website / cook books and I am pretty sure there are a lot of oriental grocer to get the stuff.

ok this is too weird---i came home with pierogis yesterday-potatoe and roasted garlic-- was gonna deep fry them, but got guilt thinking about chorus' thread! so i didnt.

Lurk alot, but don't post much any more...Wanted to respond to your post thought because I DO know what Haluski is!!!!!!!!! (Okay, yeah, I'm part Slovak.....) We don't call pierogi's, though, we call them kalutski's (sp?)...Now you have made me REALLY hungry, REALLY homesick and REALLY nostalgic! Good thing I'm going home to visit in a few weeks. Maybe I could convince Mom to make some kalutskis - hers are killer! Are you in the Pittsburgh area? My Mom and Dad are from McKeesport/Duquesne area. Still have alot of extended family there.

Now come on now, if you are anywhere near the Houston area, you know that Shipley's are the BEST donuts in the whole world!!!! How about kolaches - here in Texas, kolaches are VERY different from the kolaches they eat up north!
Oh and as for Brisket - you can take the northerner out of the north but you can't take the north out of the northerner - I've been in Texas 14 years now and still don't like Brisket!

Okay guys, not being of Slovik origin (I'm German/Swede, thanks!) and being from Iowa, I didn't know what the heck periogis and haluski were either. I'm glad it has been clarified. But reading this three page post has been tremendously entertaining and has taken my mind off all my other problems of the moment (and has made me hungry).

I will say, though, that Iowans must be very well-rounded. We're really neither northerners or southerners. We're midwesterners! We like it all!
I love sushi (thank you Chicago for introducing me to the really good stuff!), brisket, steak, seafood, bacon & eggs (was raised on a farm with chickens and everything!), and donuts.
I DO eat sugar.
And the periogis and haluski sound very good. Being of German descent, I like sauerkraut and sausage and all that yummy stuff.
Just no beer please. I hate beer! Blech! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="images/icons/shocked.gif" /> I'd enjoy the cheap wine instead.

How weird is this. The movie on TV last night was Men In Black (again) <img border="0" title="" alt="[Roll Eyes]" src="images/icons/rolleyes.gif" /> They ordered periogis and I got to SEE what it looked like.
Being from the other side of the world it's already Sunday morning here and we are going out for Mother's Day breakfast. In this part of the world that will mean for me bacon, eggs, sausages, hash browns & mushrooms. (That sounds a lot - maybe I'd better skip the huge breakfast LOL). H will probably have eggs benedict & bacon and mother will have hotcakes and maple syrup. I bet that's the same as you'll be having. Some things are world wide!! And I'm not talking McD's either although that's what it sounds like. Our local restaurants do lovely breakfasts.
D won't be coming because as I said it's Sunday morning and the chances of her being up and around are pretty slim after Saturday night.

Is there REAL maple syrup in NZ? If so, how did it get there? In a bottle from somewhere else, or from sugar maples that were planted there?
Me, I'm going to have scones, pancakes (with real maple syrup from Wisconsin, and yes I know Vermont claims it but I'm from Wisconsin and my family's been buying it at this farm for a quarter century), scrambled eggs, sausage (if anyone remembered to buy any), strawberries, and coffee for Mother's Day breakfast. And yes, that's way too much food. I plan to go for a long walk with DD before getting the rest of the family (my two brothers) up to cook for me. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="images/icons/wink.gif" />
I think they forgot the orange juice. Hmm. Maybe I'll stop at the store while I'm out for that walk. OJ and sausage. That'll be funny.
I had Runza last month in NE. Not as good as I'd been led to believe, but then again the girl (yes, girl) who served them to us was wearing roller skates, so it might not've been the best place to get them.
Last time I had pierogies I was in Canada.
So when was the last time anyone had a really good pasty?
Or, pulling from another of my most-favorite food groups, anyone here like gefilte fish or haroset?
How about lefse and lutefiske?
Dear me, I do love food. No wonder I'm so round.

Speaking of good food, I'm about to have steamed artichokes laced with fresh parmesean with a side of mayo mixed with freshly roasted crushed garlic on the side for dipping. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="images/icons/grin.gif" />

Maple syrup gets to NZ in a very expensive bottle imported from America <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="images/icons/grin.gif" />
The usual maple syrup is the flavoured stuff like you get at McD's and that's what we use at home.
We all had the huge breakfast. LOL.

Yummy artichokes! That dipping sauce sounds good. Might have to try it. I usually just dip mine in melted butter.

But then, there was my traditional Christmas foods in your post.
Before that I was thinking about Lucky Charms cereal, where nearly all the calories are empty & useless, but it is a cheerful AND colorful food.
Last time I was home, my sister & SIL were laughing about a meal they had accidentally co-produced: chicken noodle casserole, mashed pototoes, califlower, dinner rolls and vanila ice cream.
In case you can't figure out the funny part...all the foods were white, and so were the plates.
