Here's the source, by Hughes Mearns:

WAT:
Cool! It's interesting where these things come from.
My sig line 2uote allegedly came from a bathroom stall at White Sands during a time when UFOs were unusually popular. It was recently 2uoted by a friend of mine in a popular astronomy magazine article.

Yea, Jimmy Buffett claims his tune, "The weather is here, wish you were beautiful" was inspired by seeing that quote in a bathroom stall in some bar. Hmmmm. Come to think of it, I think I saw that, too!

WAT:
Love that Jimmy Buffet 2uote. I don't know all that much Jimmy Buffet, but I did stay in a Holiday Inn Express a 2ple of years ago.
Mel:
If ol' 2long is understanding WAT's original comment about the poem, it's alluding 2 OPs who aren't there and won't stay not there.
Kind of reminds me of my favorite bumper sticker of all time, plastered on the right hand side of a semi cab, just behind the passenger's door:
"I can't see you, so don't pretend 2 be there."
Needless 2 say, ol' 2long, driving a 1967 VW microbus at the time ("if you have a head-on collision with a dog, you lose" - Bill Cosby), didn't pretend 2 linger in his blind spot 2long!
I've been pretending RM doesn't exist for 29 months now. Even2ally, I expect his coworkers will see him disappear in a puff of acrid, thick, brown, foul-smelling smoke (fog?). Oh, 2 be a fly on the wall on that day!

I expect Mearns was describing recurring thoughts or fears that you can't shake.
Actually, what Mearns poem originally meant to me was the recurring "presence" of my XW and the affair. She won't leave me alone! Read: I had trouble NOT thinking about the whole sordid situation despite logically knowing that I was the only sane one left standing. (I posted this on D/D in April of 2003.)

ML, I'm not trying to stir up issues, but it always surprised me that Texas went with the south. At the time it was in the west. Yes it had been a slave state but there were relatively few compared to Va, Al, MS or Ga.
Probably just that independent mindedness that said since we were a country once our state rights are more important than the federal.
Sorry for the thread jack.

WAT:
And so it goes for most of us, even those who recover their Ms. I sometimes worry that, because most of us are BSs comparing notes about how we deal with the A, we're perpe2ating the incessant "thinking" or video of the A, whether it's going on or not. Makes it hard 2 let go sometimes.

I read this a bit differently. To me is symbolizes a dead marriage. I have a friend as I'm sure we all do who is stuck in an outed A. He can't leave W or lover. Just like the analogy in HNHN's. I would imagine this echoes his wife sentiments.

Oh well, time 2 change the sig line again!
How's this one for real world poetry? (John Prine, for reference when I change it 2 something else)

~2oodleLong~
I was listening to morning DJ's "Mark and Brian"
and it was mentioned...
There is soon to be the long anticipated fly-by near or through (?) the rings of Saturn (no car jokes please).
So, I want ya to send me some close-ups.
Please explain this to my pea sized cranium... what is going to happen?
K?

WAT:
I saw Prine on a live concert on PBS something ridiculous like 35 years ago. It was amazingly relaxing stuff.
Pep:
Hopefully, NOTHING will happen. The fear is going through the ring plane and hitting something (but both Voyagers and Pioneer 11 did this successfully).
Saturn is a beautiful planet, almost as beautiful as Neptune (and a whole helluva lot closer).
If I drove a Saturn, I'd have someone paint the name "Jupiter 8" over the Saturn logo... (this is a test of your Sci-Fi trivia knowledge).
...going through the rings of Saturn? It might be the valve guides, you know? Valve jobs are cheaper than ring jobs, so it's important 2 know.
