I told you about my college/hippy mountain town. We have a bubble economy here. Tons of jobs. Lots of outlying areas to live with almost zero rent to pay. In town, I would expect to rent at around the same it would cost you for a house payment. $700 - $900 a month. Weather changes here a lot though. Hot and humid summers and cold icy winters. It's not perfect but it's home.

Weaver,
I've been on many river rope swings too. Lots of fun to jump off the bridges into the river as well.

LOL.... Just went back and read the first of this thread.

Yes, we have been known to have a few twisters. But 1-3 every ten years is about par. They usually come in packs. And they usually stay on the OK side where we Arkansans like them. We have an ice storm about every 5 years or so. The summers can be humid but not as bad in say LA. or TX.. There is a huge influx of people moving in from the west coast and across the border. Like I said it's a booming economy. The home of Wal-Mart, Tyson, and more trucking companies than you can count.

OK, believer....had to chime in here...

Long Island. If it weren't so damned expensive, it really would be near ideal.

Water, of course, everywhere! (No more than a 30 minute drive no matter where you are!) NYC to your left; farmland/vintage America to your right. Everything--yes, "everything" in between! (OK...we don't have mountains! A few hills because of the glacier, but...It's just an hour & 15 minutes (if that) up to Westchester and the beginning of the Catskills/Adirondacks.)

The history and landmarks are really endless.

It is a bit fast paced and did I mention, a bit expensive?!?!

The people? I suppose, like with any community, you have your schmoes and truly nice people.

Did I mention that it's a bit expensive?

well if you really want to start off in a lovely new place I think you should come to Australia!!

Can't you see yourself saying 'G'day mate'??

In the south you have semi Nordic style weather and very green island of Tasmania, you know Tassie devil country like on Bugs bunny, then you have Mediterranean lifestyle a bit further up, bit like Spain, France, Italy & Greece, or California then as you go North you have Mid Western Arizona style weather, deserts & things, and then once you get North..Tropical - like Singapore with rainforests and rain, heat , rain , heat well you get the picture.

Beaches, miles & miles of beaches with NO ONE around especially in the West and North, West is dryer & warmer than the East coast.....

Of course you also have sharks, bull sharks, grey nurse, hammer head, white pointer, Tiger, lemon etc etc, 10 most poisonous snakes in the world not including the sea snake which is quite cute & friendly until you annoy it, 2 deadly jellyfish the size of your hand, king waves- like little tidal wives but only restricted to a small area of a few hundred feet to mile wide which is a bother when you go fishing, crocodiles which seem to love the sewer/storm drain system for some reason and tourists who ignore the signs and camp on the rivers or go swimming in them....but no place is perfect I suppose.

Believer -

This is the coolest thread, and my favorite. When everyone gets done sharing about their homes, I'm going to print it out. Great way to dream about where to go when I retire.

FH -

I don't know what minoqua (Native term?) means, but I agree with you about your folks. Are they Finnish? This is not a good place for retired people to live. The winters are too long and there is not enough sunshine, or activities for people, especially those who are retired...and way too much depression going on.

Believer, Weaver, and others,

Sorry I haven't answered sooner. but I am not on our PC that much.

When our CA raised daughter came here, she called MO misery and moved to the UK (long story). We really love it here. As a soldier, we have lived in many different places.

My wife was born in MI, but her parents moved to CA whan she was 2 years old.

I am a NY boy. We moved to Long Island when my dad returned from WW II, and I call there my home. In Aug 02, we went back for my HS reunion. I could not afford to even dream of buying the house my parents build for $23K in 1949.

At the present time, we have a daughter in Rancho Bernardo with her husband and 8 children, a son in Palm Springs with his mother (my first wife), a daughter in Mountclair, NJ with her husband and their 4 children, a son we can't seem to kick out of the house, and the daughter in King's Lynn, Norfolk, UK with her husband and son.

As you can see, we get to travel around. However, we still love to return to central MO. The humitity can get up there some summers; however, this last summer was plesant. We have a friend from Bosnia who lives in Jacksonville, FL whom we went to visit. Now they have humitity!
I am with FiM. As I wrote before, I wanted to retire to the Pacific Northwest. When we processed out of the Army at Fort Lewis, I wanted to stay. I will never convince my CA girl that it doesn't rain a lot there.

Another vote for Tennessee!
I'm a native Californian but the traffic and cost of living do not beckon me to live there, only to visit!

The South has a charm all it's own. People here are so friendly, everyone knows their neighbors and there are churches of all denominations on just about every corner.

Family seems to be the driving force here is decisions about everything.

We have all the seasons, but winter is very mild, we can golf, play soccer etc. through Christmas and just have a few cold months until the glorious azaleas and dogwoods bloom for spring! Happy Fall Y'all!

I grew up in Cleveland. Great town, great people and I still love my Indians, Browns and Cavs. Hated the weather 4 months a year. I have lived a few different places and ALL have their own charm but if you take away the cost of living, San Diego is a runaway winner in my book. ( although the Guanacaste coast in Costa Rica is pretty close)

Thanks all for responding. I am thinking of moving somewhere else. I do live in paradise, but there are problems.

jph - I have known several people from Tennessee, and they are good people. I love horses, and since Tennessee is the blue grass state, always thought about moving there.

Hopeful - Well, I've been to NC and thought it was very beautiful. I don't like hurricanes though.

Shmaley - Hmmmmmmm. Being an ex-hippy, Fayetteville sounds good. I think I might fit in there.

Aussie's wife - I think I would love Australia. But I can't understand you folks.

Binder - Ahhhh. Canada. I love Vancouver. I went to college in northern Washington, and used to go to Canada every weekend. But today I went swimming in the ocean, in my bikini. It's snowing there? Yikes!!!!!!!

LINY - I was there at Woodstock. You are too young to remember the free-love days. But it was a good time for me.

I vote for Colorado or Montana. The Rockies are so beautiful in the Winter. Hubby and I want to move there someday. We are thinking Manitou Springs, CO. It's located at the base of the Rockies (Pikes Peak), it's near Colorado Springs, and there is lots of old craftmen style homes.

Oh man, I wanna pack my bags and move NOW!!

Now if I really had a boat load of money I would move to New Zealand. AHHHHH - sunshine, snow, great landscapes and mountains. Yum yum!

My vote is for Kansas... 2 day drive to anywhere in the US, except Alaska...

All four seasons can be experienced in every year, and temps from below 0 to over 100 degrees. I live right between the Kansas University Jayhawks (basketball fans) and the Kansas State Wildcats (football fans). There are 5 state lakes within an hour drive, filled with bass, crappie, sauger, walleye, and more catfish than you can shake a pole at.

The skies are enhanced with a deep blue background, and big puffy white clouds that can turn into a thunderstorm that'll scare the hell out of you, and a night sky painted with a jillion stars. And for those of you worried about tornadoes, most native Kansan's have never seen one.

Great interstate highways (thank's President Eisenhower), reasonable taxes, low cost of living, and plenty of jobs in the metro areas. Kansas City is one of the neatest cities in the US. (except for the Royals )

I've been in 45 of our 50 states, and I'd still live here!

For instance, fish & chips comes out in NZ as Fash & Chups ........

but thats ok apparently as Aussie says they drink beer so thats makes up for it

oops speaking of whom he's just stumbled in the door waking the neighbours so I had better get him to bed

I was born, raised and lived in Southern Calif for 20+ years. I moved to the Pacific NW (Washington State) to be with my H and his family. Been here ever since.

My mom is blown away that I never moved back home knowing I was always a die hard beach girl.

I love it here. I live in Gig Harbor, on the Penninsula. It's beautiful where I live. It's semi-rural with town simply a few miles away. Since moving here the economy has changed, not unlike the rest of the country. I work in the high tech industry, engineer, and luckliy my wages have kept up with the inflation.

And yes, it rains 6+ mos out of the year. But I have never seen Autumns, Springs and Summer's that are more beautiful then here in Washington.

I'm blessed.
