I'm down with that colorful Latin stuff, but my bedroom stuff is dark brown wood and I dig earthy colors too.

I'm taking the paint and stain off the doors, trim, windows, e'ything. Starting over. My walls aren't even primed, and the maple floors will be refinished. The room will be a blank slate, all by the sweat o' my brow.

You have Trader Joes or World Market up there, right? You'll find huge amounts of in-expensive decor there - the best is on their sale aisle - I got ceramic knobs for my slut red cabinet for .99 for 2. They are colbalt blue with yellow flowers. Couple those with the slut red cabinet (I've got to say it...I just can't say cabinet - it's the whole title thingy), and it looks very latin and rustic.

We have World Market here.

My walls are never-painted plaster, and last year we had the cracks taped and the walls skim-coated with drywall mud. It's wise to use primer on that stuff because it sucks up paint like a sponge.

Also put in a new ceiling (had to take down the textured ceiling, which just does not work in an 80yo house.

Gray and Kimmi -
I live in a real dump, but have fixed it up to be beautiful. The new look is less is more, very spartan. I threw tons of stuff out, and rearranged and painted. And I did it all with practically no money.
People come and look at my place and can't believe how it has changed. I got lots of stuff from garage sales and even from dumpster diving. It is easy to do if you have the interest.

Kimi - Do you know how to make carne asada ranchero? I'm attempting it today. I have the thin sliced beef, and added oranges, lemons, garlic, and onions to marinate.

We cook all sorts of stuff here - Italian, Thai, Indian, Mexican, Pacific (lots of seafood), English, and NZ (which traditionally is baked (roasted) meat) and barbeques are a way of life all summer long.

I've looked at lots of cookbooks from the States and we cook most of what you cook and in the same way.

Jen - Carne asada is real thin sliced beef in a marinade which you then barbecue and eat in a tortilla. Very delicious and low fat too.

Believer - I don't make asada - I make guisada - different gravy. I use stew meat (beef tips) for it...the gravy is...um...richer, for lack of better words (at least the versions here are - you do realize that locations changes the versions so much in this cuisine?).

Would you please ask your roomie how to make a good mole sauce? That was about the only thing I didn't get to learn from my mil. She made chicken mole for our wedding feast - and I don't think I've had it that good ever since.
