You know, though, I thought more and more about ff's link about the tourists back on the beach. MY first instinct was utter and complete digust. But I thought more about it, and, I'm at another impass with myself about what the heck these natives should do. I mean, 3 months out of the year is their income for the *entire* year. Their livelihood is *only* tourism. I don't know. (I mean, don't get me wrong--I think those people sunbathing and making that sandcastle or whatever they were doing have absolutely no conscious.) Maybe sending in their "vacation trip" money as a donation rather than actually going and sunbathing...

Liny, I agree, tourism is what keeps these places going but if you're going to be there with your tourist dollar, at least help out. You can spend your money in the bars and restaurants but you can still help clear up the mess or help people find their loved ones.

Saw interview with some Aussies and other tourists who said they were staying in the hotels still operating because if they left the local people woulf have no income for between 3 & 6 months.

They had thought about donating the money but were worried that it would 'disappear'.

I know I wouldn't have been able to cope, I'd have been frightened and I'd have been on the first plane out of there but a lot of people have stayed on to help. Proud to say that a lot of my countrymen are amongst those helping.

I know the areas quite well as Aussie & I spend time there once a year usually - until this yr obviously (sigh) - you know its Xmas or June July that we go up there & we were seriously thinking about it for Xmas until his deployment to 'clear' our heads etc....... maybe the deployment was a hidden blessing, even with all the ****.

I know a lot of medical and emergency service staff from Perth are staying on and helping, though its gathering forensic material now and burning the bodies as even dry ice can do only so much... well some HAPPY news..they found another baby on a mattress alive & well
