Tales from the south!
Way back when... it was either (1770's 0r 1970's) I landed in Shreveport Louisiana (some military base I forgot the name of) for an overnight layover. We (the flight crew) were put up in some local motel. My friend and I decided to go to a restaurant for dinner (supper?). Both of us were young, cute, and we had short sassy haircuts a'la Dorothy Hammel.
We dined on the most delicious faire ever imagined! Luscious food and truely elegant service. We had 4 white-gloved waiters calling us "Miss".
And the food was not at all expensive. I really felt like I'd been given the royal treatment!
At the end of the meal, one of the waiters shyly requested my autograph.... which I signed. Then I asked him, "Why do you want my autograph?".
"Ya'll are with the Ice Capades!"
We died laughing!!!

And little did they know they were dealing with a left-coaster!! How funny!
We were in Shreveport night before last gambling. They do have some excellent food over there.

This was during the Vietnam war, and I was assigned to lots of MAC charters. Sometimes taking Boys to war, sometimes to R&R destinations, and sometimes back home.
I can't wait to go to Mississippi... and Susan waits on me hand and foot wearing her little white gloves and calling me "Miss". Although, me being older than Susan, maybe she should call me "Your royal highness."
What all ya'll think?

RIF,
Where did you grow up in MS? Small town or Jackson? Not really any other large cities round these parts.
Funny fact about me is that I never left this state until I was a senior in high school. As is obvious from my name, I have led a rather naive and very sheltered life.
Also,
Papermom - loved your gravy recipe! Too funny!
Bob Pure - Sounds like you might have eaten a bit of southern food in your time. I just recently found out that I have some long lost relatives in your part of the world.

RIF,
I grew up in a small town too. I guess it is more in central MS.
Sorry RIF, oddly enough neither my H nor I are sports fans. Some folks around here would be appalled that we have no idea who won the Egg Bowl. . I had no idea so I asked H, and he didn't know either. We don't really have a school allegience. I went to Delta State. H went to USM. And I really don't keep up with the sports there anymore, although I really enjoyed baseball and basketball while I was there.
It really is a small world.

WHO let the 'dawgs out?
ooops...I guess somebody forgot to. We lost.
I grew up really close to Delta State. My H. graduated from MSU and we were married, so we lived there a while.
Now I'm living right here at USM!
Wow, the world is getting smaller and smaller.
Naivegirl, you have mail.

I grew up about 30 miles south of Tupelo at the intersection of Hwy 8 and Hwy 15... The town name is the same as one of the larger cities in TX... Oh, and it's 1/2 way between Starkville & Oxford...
I probably gave you WAY to many clues!!!
So where did you grow up?

Hi, RIF, Yep, I know 'xactly where you grew up. I go to P____ near there from time to time to pick up materials for our business. I live about 13 miles from where I grew up. I'm about 30 miles on 78 heading northwest from N.A. (I was born in N.A., as were my children and grandchildren), and about 30 miles N of Oxford. I grew up in P.C. (between H.F. and H.S.). Hope that helps! LC

NG -
I have to get in on this! I love that I'm not the only person in the world who has thought about this topic. The FOW in my sitch is not from the South. I have often thought of what my H would do if he didn't have my southern home cooking. I've managed to hook the boy on Turnip Greens and Pinto Beans...add a few cap fulls of pure white vinegar and you're in for a grand ol' meal Tennessee style.
His family served Turnip Greens this Thanksgiving just for me...they had never tried them until they had Turkey Day at my house and now they all love them. It made me feel so good when they surprised me with that treat!!!!
I can completely relate to the Southern dishes discussed in this thread. Thanks for the laugh NG!

The OW in my sitch has TOLD me, "I don't bake or cook." Okay. I'm an avid baker and cook. I learned all dwh's fav dishes from his mother before she passed (he's Latino). I make all my sauces homemade. OW's also Hispanic.......he'd have starved. In fact, I know that the one time he left me, they survived on pizza only.
