WAT asked for an update, which I will provide when there's anything particularly useful to say. For now, this is just random noise:

The icemaker continues to make ice. We haven't found the shutoff valve in either of the places we looked. I was smart enough to empty the tray before leaving for the weekend.

When I looked at the stove, I realized that the holes are actually slots incised in the metal disks that cover the burner. None of them seem to be clogged. When I take the disk off and watch the sparking mechanism, it seems to produce a fine spark. So I'm wondering if it's an air-gas mix problem.

The dryer .... I never answered the questions people had about the dryer. Hmmm. I'll have to go back and look at those.

Yes, things come out nice and warm when they are finally dry.

Do you know whether the drum is turning? - i.e., are the weird noises a slipping belt between the motor and drum?

It's definitely noisy, but I'm not sure that it sounds like a slipping belt. The drum does turn, though. KaLUMPHKaLUMPHKaLUMPH.

If the drum is turning, do you know whether the exhaust is blocked? While it's on, see if air is coming out of the outside exhaust fixture.

Air does come out of the exhaust, yes.

So I'm wondering if it's an air-gas mix problem.
But when you light it with a match, it burns properly, right? If so, that rules out a mixture problem to me.

On the gas range I had in my prior home, I had to clean out the little holes in the burner periodically. I can't explain why it lit just fine with a match, but not the electrostatic starter before cleaning out the holes. I never did see that the holes were dirty or blocked - just stuck a paper clip in them one-by-one and that seems to fix it. Try cleaning the slots anyway. It's easy and cheap.

So it takes an inordinate amount of time to dry stuff?

Is the drum "loose"? Can you wobble it up and down or side to side?

I wanna say the bearing is shot on the drum axle, which would explain the noise, but would only affect drying time if the drum wasn't turning as much as it should - not tossing the clothes. Is your practice to load it up with a LOT of stuff?

Slight possibility that through the grounding system of the stove, the sparker is arcing to the inside of the cap instead of the cathode, moving the spark away from the gas jet.

Let 'er rip. She'll EVENTUALLY catch.

I know, I'm a woman....but I had a very noisy dryer not too long ago and it turned out the straps that kind of hold the drum in "place" had broken.....probably from overloading it one too many times. Quick, easy, and cheap to fix (except for the service call!)

I hope that's all it is.

But now I have a jammed disposer. At least I think it's jammed. I accidentally let a corn cob holder get down there and mangled it up a bit, maybe I didn't get it all. I hate appliances...when they don't work! LOL.

NOW,

"But now I have a jammed disposer. At least I think it's jammed.""

If it hums when you turn it on it is jammed. MAKE SURE THE DISPOSER IS OFF. Stick a wooden broom handle down there and try to turn the disposer with it. TAKE OUT THE BROOM HANDLE and turn on the disposer. Hopefully it will now work.

If it does not hum when you turn it on, check under the disposer. There should be a re-set button. MAKE SURE THE DISPOSER IS OFF and push the re-set button. That may do the trick.

Thanks....yes, it does hum. First it worked, then it hummed, then nothing. Then I found the reset button and it's back to humming. I'll try the broom handle....boy, my hubby sure will be impressed if I can fix this thing! Cool!

Oh yeah.....it worked!

I am tickled to death....

I hope you all don't start charging for advice given on this thread!

I think what I'll do is smear grease all over my face and hands, mess up my hair and let RH think...no, that would be lying.
Thanks again!

Ah ha! More information. While I was lighting the stove tonight for dinner, I was going to do the paper clip cleaning thing. And then I noticed that the noise of the electrostatic spark seemed to be coming from the wrong place. Hmmm. So I took off the disks that cover the insides, and sure enough. Turn on one burner, and one of the OTHER starters goes. Weird. And time to call in a professional, I think.

Dryer: I'll be checking on that tomorrow night or Thursday, which is the next time I'll do laundry. Yes, I could walk down there now, but I'm not going to. I don't load it up with a lot of stuff, though.

NOW - instead of a broom handle, there's usually a hex head key - looks like a big allen wrench with the end bent at about 45 degrees - that comes with every new disposer that fits into the hex hole in the bottom of the disposer. When the "jaws" get jammed by some object that shouldn't be "disposed", you use the key to reverse the motor by hand from the normal rotation to loosen whatever caused the jam. Then you can reach in and remove it.

New disposers usually come with a plastic pouch that gets attached to the disposer under the sink to hold the key so it doesn't get lost. If yours is lost, you can get another one from a hardware store or apppliance place. They're a universal size.

Anytime you hear a motor hum and not turn, immediately turn it off. This is called a "locked rotor" condition and will burn up the motor if the circuit breaker doesn't open.

J - it could be that all the starters are supposed to spark whenever any burner is turned on. Check this out by watching the starter you know works while turning on other burners. It doesn't make sense that the failure mode would be the incorrect starter firing - that would require intentional re-wiring if starters and burners were originally paired.

edited to add: Alternatively, chant and shake colored beads over the stove and swap the knobs on the burners. That ought to fix it.

Funny, jelly.

Of course, I'll "refuse" to get sucked into a male/female stereotype discussion. I'll argue that this was a guys thread to begin with and gurlz with their "insecurities" about fixing things wouldn't understand guy stuff and....

Wait a minute. That won't work.

Nevermind.

Hey, ask Resilient to re-tell her story about how she singlehandedly - with girl intuition - changed the rug under her bed without no dern guy help. A thing of beauty.
