I have a hard time with this movie. I will certainly not see it. I suppose what bothers me the most is that this movie makes the 911 tragedy a commercial enterprise at a time when we are all most vulnerable to emotional drain from that terrible day. It is much too soon to make this movie. It is guaranteed to keep the victim’s families wounds open and at the surface, despite the claims to the contrary.

I think there was no important need to make this movie. Had Osama been captured or if there was a significant blow to the heart of terrorism resulting from the 911 acts then I might feel a bit different. That is sadly not the case.

As of now, it smacks of exploitation of a terrible memory by the movie industry to me. I guess the director; Oliver Stone believes his own words (or the words of Gordon Geckko, Wall Street, 1987) “Greed is good”.

This movie was made at least 10 years too early.

Mr. G

I think it may be 60 years too early....

My great uncle died on the USS Indianapolis 1945 and my grandmother and great aunts still can`t talk about it. While I think it is important to document events like these for future generations, people who were there and lived it usually do not need reminders. That`s just my 2 cents worth.

I saw it. I recommend it (though I understand it's a personal choice). I didn't feel it was exploitive at all. It was an important story about how people rallied together selflessly to save two men trapped in rubble.

It touched me. It had pro-family, pro-marriage themes running through it, which brought tears and hence helped me release some anger I've been dealing with the last week. And I could have just gone to the gym!

I agree with Mr. G.

We're still living it.

It's part of our every day lives. (anyone that lives by, or works by the WTC site.. rides the path trains...or the subways...etc)

It's not "history" yet.

I don't know if it's different for anyone that's geographically close to it...as it is for someone on the west coast...so to speak.

BIJ,

I have wondered about the how the people on the west coast felt about it too, I have never been to Oklahoma City, don`t know anyone there, but that was another event that completely freaked me out and I avoid reading/watching anything related to that event as well. I never got over that either.

Okay without giving the movie totally away how was the movie pro family/pro marriage?

If I do see it I would take my 13 year old son. Even if I am not keen on seeing it would it be a good movie for him to see?

Pep, Hardlesson - what exactly is "pro-family"?

The opposite of "anti-family"?

Daisey,
Don't know that I can answer your question without giving away the movie.

With that caveate: Two men are trapped beneath layers of rubble, pinned down by huge concrete block and debris, bones broken, internal bleeding and barely able to stay awake. If they are not found, they will surely die. Ultimately they are motivated to stay alive and not give in because they hold onto the memories of their wives and families.

A chinese family at our school moved back from NY after 9/11. It was a catalyst in them returning to their families and having a fresh start. In a mad, sad twist of fate, the father was one of the first victims of SARS. He was infected on a business flight to Beijing from HK. Life really can be cruel to some people.

Edited to add: he was actually in the first tower and survived that atrocity but didn't survive SARS. I don't think I made that clear.

Would an inwardly sensitive 13 year old be adversely affected by this movie?

I would like for him to see it, get a good dose of reality but I`m not sure if he`s too young.

Where we live we are in a bubble, although Canada is at war too and in recent weeks many Canadian soldiers have been killed where we live we see no signs that a war is on. No one has "support our troops' stickers on their cars, none of the stores are collecting personal items to send to the troops, no ribbons, no flags are displayed on people`s homes. At social events the war is very rarely mentioned, with the exception of the wedding I attended saturday where the part of the priest`s blessing mentioned protecting the couple from war it is almost never mentioned.

My older son goes to camp in the states so he does have a better understanding of what`s going on. But I find he`s a bit too flip about it sometimes. I don`t know...maybe that`s a typical 13 year old reaction. He`s bugging me to join the military cadets. I am not keen on this idea.

On the outside he`s full of bravado but he has a very sensitive side too. I`d like to tone down that bravado without upsetting him too much. I want him to fully understand why the war is going on. Where we live he`s heard all kinds of things, some of it off the wall conspiracy crack pot theories. Would this movie help?

If he watched the event unfold on TV (age 8) ... he should be able to see this movie.

He will be touched, but guess what? So will you!

I think it's fine for him.

Pep,

He did see the replays when he got home from school that day. Interestingly enough he heard NOTHING at school that day about what was going on, the bus driver mentioned something to the kids on the way home.

My nine year old is pretty much clueless. Both boys asked me after watching coverage of the Lebanese war "whose side are we on?" And my youngest said "How come Canada is not over there fighting?" And said "We are...you see the coffins coming back to Canada on TV right? Those boys were killed in Afghanistan" To which he answered "Oh"

Both of my boys seem to find the war "cool'. This worries me because I think these wars are far from over. One of my older son`s camp counsellors`s this summer told my son he has signed up. My son asked me what I thought about that and I said "Well...I wonder what his Mom thinks about it"

This is not "cool" and I would like to drive that home to both of them without freaking them out. I am also trying to explain to them what`s going on, how it`s all interelated without making the Islamic religion as a whole look bad.

I have had many Islamic friends over the years and I am taking great pains to teach my kids to judge people by their PERSONAL behaviour, not by their religion, culture sexual preference ect.

My older son watched "Crash" three times in a row...and that movie has helped me to put what`s going in the news into perspective for him.

I think we`ll see World Trade Center movie.

little boys are born warriors

I remember (many many years ago) asking our son's MD about toy guns ... he said

"It doesn't matter if you buy toy guns or not. Boys will make their own guns anyway. They will chew off bread into the shape of a gun. They will shoot a carrot stick like a gun."

I asked why is that?

He said (laughing) "Because they are born with what looks & shoots like a gun between their legs."

BWHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

and guess what

he was so right
boys just love to shoot things ... even if it's only shooting things with urine!

my baby brother (now 50) was the consummate "army man" growing up ... he's now a tree-hugging-Oregon-war protester .... but I think he still shoots his "gun" off a few times every day

Oh well that clears up that mystery!

My younger one seem more enthralled with guns that his older brother. My older son actually listens to me when I talk about this stuff, the younger puts his hands over his ears and says "You`re boring me Mom...I don`t want to talk about this"

My youngest pitched a fit on me other day in the dollar store when I refused to let him buy a toy gun with his own money. My older son said to him when we got in the car "Geez whiz....haven`t you learned....you will NEVER get a gun by Mom...what is wrong with you?"

H and the boys all pee on trees in our yard. I always thought they were marking their territory like dogs do. It`s revolting.

This one is loaded with spunk...he has a big deep grown man`s voice, he had this when he was a toddler too...people turn to stare when he starts talking. And he`s got a mouth, he`s usually not rude but don`t mess with him. He gets the better of most adults. This irritates my H no end. H does not appreciate or understand spunk.

This kid is a carbon copy of my brother so I`m used to it.

I love me some spunky boy! (girls too, of course) ... but a spunky boy is just about irresistable for me

I bet he's smart as a whip too!
