Does anyone out there know if there are current laws making adultery illegal. If so, which states do it?

Also, I seem to recall a movement afoot to change the laws regarding adultery. How would one go about changing the laws to make adultery less acceptable to society? Does anyone here know about it? Would anyone be interested in starting a movement about said subject?

We have laws against adultery here in Saudi Arabia. The penalty is to bury the woman up to her neck and stone her to death. There are not many repeat offenders.

I'd love to help make adultery less acceptable! I really believe it falls into the realm of emotional cruelty - If physical abuse is a crime, then I think emotional abuse should be too.

I think that it is harder to "prove" and make a case for emotional abuse. People also can just make it up.....how do you prove it???? Docuementaion, phone records, etc. etc. It could be done.

You got me laughing on that one, Pio. And I know you are probably not kidding!

Vows - I am not sure if any state has enforceable laws about adultry. But in our society the laws would not make much difference. Look at the cover of the mags the next time you are buying bread. Our society thirsts for the fodder of infidelity.

I follow a law that DOES say that adultry is wrong. XW claims to, too. That has not stopped her.

I do not know if a law would help any of us? But I am not a social scholar....

I know in NC and other states adultery is still on the books and in those state to prove adultery is far easier, it proving opportunity and intent that sex occured rather than exact proof. I guess to many PI got killed tried to get the picture.

I also heard that most states that have adultery are no fault so most people even when there is adultery in the M, settle to just do a no fault divorce rather than a messy fault divorce.

The law here is very fair. The man gets away with flogging. Wow! Got to use that word again!

Seriously, while the flogging could be fatal, it likely won't be. Depending on the number of lashes, there could be some jail time. For example, if a man were sentenced to 30 lashes, he might only get 10 at a time and then have a month in jail between sets to recover because 30 lashes probably would be fatal. The number of lashes depends on whose daughter it was.

OTOH, that is the penalty for getting caught. Infidelity is out of control amongst the local population. Most is not reported to the police for obvious reasons.

I checked the laws in my state and talked to an attorney. They have a law and it is a penalty of like 3 days in jail and $1000.00. The attorney told me that it is often a misconception that we have to have video, pictures -- that we only have to have overwhelming evidence.

I was so upset and angry. And then I laughed in disbelief.

Not that I wanted to do it. Restoration was my goal -- but if that option was not available I did not care and probably would have taken that option.

It is ironic we have laws that abound regarding things that are harmful to our families, society. But adultery! Not. As if adultery isn't as damaging to families as drugs, physical, or sexual abuse. Just ask our children who have been through it.

The catch would probably be to find a Senator or Representative who has been through it themselves. They would probably have more motivation to submit the bill to make it a law. It would also have to be done state by state.

Is it any wonder that adultery is out of control when we consistently hear of amoral, unloving parents of adulterers who fluff it off with inanities like "I just want him to be happy!" Thank the good Lord their child isn't a serial killer! All they seem to care about is being liked via methods of appeasement. They surely don't care about their children.

In that type of atmosphere, anything goes. If more people stood up and spoke out against adultery, folks might think twice about it.

I grew up with an adulterous, corrupt father and no one ever said it was wrong to me. I simply concluded that I must be a very stupid girl because my instincts sure told me it was wrong, but since no adult validated my instincts, I figured it must not be wrong.

I think many are raised this same way. They are taught that being a moral coward is a virtue. They are taught that being "judgmental" is a bad thing,[our prisons are full of people who cannot judge right frm wrong and that is exactly where they belong!] so they learn to not judge right from wrong. They are taught that that "being happy" is the most important thing, no matter how many people they destroy in the process. What they are not taught is that happiness is the result of BEING GOOD, not being BAD. Happiness via adultery is FOOLS GOOD. It is really a RATTLESNAKE.

I don't know any adulterers who are "happy" after the initial fleeting infatuation wears off. Rather, they feel great grief and shame at what they have become. Their acts diminish their souls. They grieve the monstrous trauma they have inflicted on their families FOR YEARS afterwards. Thier affairs did not bring them "happiness," but rather HE11 on earth.

The problem is, most of the senators and representatives, are the ones COMMITTING the adultery, not suffering from it

There are two facts that lead me to make that statement:

#1 (unfortunately, dont remember the exact reference, but)... someone was writing an account of their visit to washington, and in some major red light district/club/whatever, there was a very large contingent of politician "regulars"

#2 Someone brought up the idea of making adultery an offence, on the floor of (the senate/house) within the last 3 months I believe, and "he was laughed off the floor", according to J. Dobson.

Well, that's an interesting thought. How many of us would expose adultery if we knew for certain someone was going to die. I know I wouldn't go that far. As bad as infidelity is, I just can't see it leading to a death sentence -- particularly if only one of the guilty parties is put to death. "Just" flogging might be an acceptable level since it shouldn't cause permanent injury.

I guess at some point, you can make the penalty so serious that it has the oppositie effect than intended.

I wonder what everyone else thinks?

Well talk about the ultimate adrenaline rush. I doubt the majority of people here who commit adultery do it for the excitement of possible death. I think it is much more fundamental than that. Think about complete coverage. Magazines show women blacked out with magic marker. Zero visible skin. This is no lie but just the sight of a woman's ankle below her abaya from a sudden gust of wind can cause traffic accidents. I have seen it with my own eyes. It is complete and total censorship (IMO) that creates problems.

I may have mentioned this before but many years ago I was living in Abu Dhabi. While Abu Dhabi is conservative, women don't have to wear abayas. I had been there for a bit more than a year doing nothing but traveling around the Middle East to all but the countries I can't mention. Anyway, one time I had to go to Singapore. I had been to Singapore before but not in a while. My flight got in at 3:00AM so I went straight to the hotel to sleep. I got up about 10:00AM and decided to go for a walk. My first and overwhelming reaction was "THESE WOMEN NEED TO PUT SOME CLOTHES ON!". Now I didn't think that the first time I visited Singapore so why now?

I guess my point is that you get desensitized to things when you are around them. Sometimes that isn't a good thing but it is a fact. In this case, people are so protected from sex that it is all they think about - both men and women. So by forcing people to be virtuous, they become anything but. Being "virtuous" needs to be a personal choice - not a government imposed rule. Playing devil's advocate, exactly how much virtuosity should a government impose? Should the government tell us we can't kill each other? My vote is yes. Should the government tell us we can't rob banks? Okay, yes again. Even so, people still do it. Should the government tell me I can't commit adultery? It is a moot point. I am the only one who can tell me that it is wrong and not to do it.

This thread, IMO, is still about being a victim. It is the BS saying "somebody please solve my problems for me". In this case it is the government (they enact the laws). If there were a law against adultery, I would not be a betrayed spouse. Wrong. If there were problems in my marriage, the government cannot fix those for me. I have seen the other extreme where there are strict laws against everything and I know it is not effective. The government cannot make us better people - only we can do that. Okay I will be bold here (big step for me right?). Just look at the original poster's screen name. It screams of "victim". God made a law that vows are sacred. How could somebody violate that? Well, regardless, they did so I need another law beyond God's law. I need the Senate to give me further protection by enacting a new law and the President to sign it and the ACLU to NOT challenge it in the Supreme Court. Then everything will be good in my life again. vowsRsacred, I was told a long time ago that I needed a new screen name. I think maybe you do too. Just an idea.

So enact laws against adultery. It won't stop it. All it might do is give the BS leverage when he/she files for divorce.

I mentioned a while ago about the politican here in NZ who has just been outed for committing adultery for the second time (on his affair wife).

Sorry and sad to say the general public think it's terrible that the whistle was blown on him and that his personal life should remain his personal life. The messenger is currently being "shot" by the press and by public opinion. There is the odd lone voice saying they wouldn't believe a word he (the politician) said anymore but they are definitely in the minority.

It makes me sick.

We are now a "no fault" divorce country but my mother remembers when adultery was one of the only grounds for divorce. EVERY divorce case was written up in a local tabloid and all details and I mean ALL details, including names were printed.

John F Kennedy - Marilyn Monroe
Jimmy Carter - Lusted in his heart
Bill Clinton - well, you know.
Ronald Reagan - Nancy was an OW.

All these men had left behind great legacies - some even deserved - some not.

Who was that Arkansas senator arrested years ago for dancing naked in the Washington fountain with the hooker? Wilbur Mills? Don't quote me on that. Whoever it was, he became a legend and she became rich and famous.

Do we expect our politicians to be good people? If they were, they wouldn't be good politicians.

John F Kennedy - so many his staff lost count - apparently one a day

On the same subject, Rob was watching a programme on the History channel about the Russian Royal Family in the 16th century. I came in half way through and he said "that King found his W had committed adultery - he put her in a nunnery and she never saw the light of day again and he had the OM tortured then beheaded."

There was silence and then I said "gosh."

We sort of laughed.
