I think what K meant by leading by example was just to follow what you believe about faith to the best of your ability.
I think for most Catholics who are gone for a long time, they will naturally desire to make a new start. Believe it or not, I just recently heard my daughter say that she wanted to go to confession and make a new start (she was off the right road for a long time, now hopefully back on).
