Hi Catamount,
Welcome to our hellish world. So sorry to hear about your pain and sadness.
I don't know what to tell you, other than none of us will probably ever understand the 'whys' as long as we inhabit this earth.
At the moment, I am merely guessing that my H has some type of mental illness based on his childhood, his family's predisposition to mental problems, & evidence of abnormal brain functioning on an EEG. In addition to that, an MRI did reveal brain damage although probably inflicted quite some time ago.
Make sure you read up on the Harley marriage building principles. And, most of all, take care of YOU and that little girl.
Thoughts and prayers are with you.

Yes, I believe unresolved childhood issues can really come into play!!
Let's face it...we almost all have them!! (unrsolved issues) I think it is these issues that may lead us to our marital difficulties to begin with...
It takes two mature adults working on the marraige to keep it healthy!!! Of course lots of other factors come into play....children, financial burdens, health, jobs, family (IL's)!!! that upset the "happiness" scale. But it is how we deal with these issues that can effect our relationships.
We may deal with these issues based on how we watched our family of origin deal with them, or friends, or saw on TV (heaven forbid) or we may never have faced them before and don't know how to handle them.
I guess we are all on that unending ladder up (hopefully)....some just seem to get stuck!!!!!!
