You can answer fully honestly by telling him/them that you and your exH weren't meeting each other's emotional needs in various areas such as x, y, and z. And then you can explain how you wrongly chose to deal with it, before you knew the right way to do things. But you also don't need to get into the details of the why early on in meeting someone if you don't want to. Some situations (like mine? LOL) scare some men away.

I've done some dating myself this summer. I've only met 3 men in person so far. And like you, I too have my list of "requirements" before I'll even dream of meeting someone... even if just for a coffee. I've "settled" for less than I deserve in the past, and I sure as heck REFUSE to do it again!!! So basically, even if only meeting as friends, I will only meet men that fit into my ideal long term mate categories (all family court issues are dealt with, if it's an issue, done with having kids, if he has kids he must see them often, he must be close to his family... but not too close, like what you suggest. LOL., he must be tall (it's our 5'10" height thing... it IS an issue!), a non smoker is preferable, he must have a core belief in God, etc.

And as a rule of thumb Jen, if someone thinks your ideals are too high... it's only because they can't measure up to them. Do NOT settle!!!!

As far as the finalizing of my D, the papers were eventually served on my ex a few weeks ago (August 20th). After 31 days pass, and assuming he doesn't contest it, my lawyer can take it to the court to request the finalizing of the D. So... September 21st, my lawyer can make the appt with the courts... that should take a few weeks to be seen, and then 31 days after THAT... I will FINALLY be a divorced woman!!! WOOHOO!!! (whoever thought something like that could ever make me so happy??? LOL).

My birthday is on November 10th... so I'm thinking it'll all fall around the same time. It'll be a mega party! WOOHOO!!!

Jen,
NO! Your expectations are not unreasonable at all. And there are men out there who will EXCEED them. I know this for a fact.
