Today on the news over here in oz i was shocked to hear a frontline report about one of our national sports captains retiring because he confessed he had been having an A with his best mates wife...and his own wife is now in hospital from shock...you even get to see some footage of the father-in-law getting angry....
This is utter scandal...
And its not the A I'm shocked about, its the right to privacy...something they dont have. of course when youre in a position of responsibility you have to be even more careful how you display your life, but is this necessary?
I know when my H's A came out the whole church were told at a special meeting...and they were there to face everyone (I had gone away to think about the future). But when I came back I felt so embarrassed. I felt like I'd left a pair of undies out on the doorstep with huge "skid-marks" aLL over them...that people would think i was a bad wife that drove my H to it and that our marriage wasnt good. All 4 of us directly involved were working for the church in different capacities, so it HAD to be told to everyone. My H thinks I go round telling everyone about it, but to be honest, its still embarrassing, why does anyone need to know? I dont need sympathy. This woman is in shock in hospital...she doesnt need the whole world staring at her skidmarks. And i certainly dont want people think badly of my H, hes got enough of that from leaving me pregnant.
I'm not so sure this was a good thing.
Secondly, i think it is cheaky of the media to decide what and when they feel like being moral. The TV is full of filth and A's are so common, youre almost still a virgin if you havent had one.
I understand all sin will eventually come to light, but is making it public always the best way?
Do you think this is about juicy gossip, good for ratings, or an honest head hunt, if there is such a thing.

Dancer, I'm from oz too, and feel as sad as you do about this whole thing. They are advertising talk shows about it! I know how I feel about what happened to me-I've told some people, but not many, certainly not my work colleagues or neighbours, because of the shame. Others I felt needed to know (my dad, my friends, but these are people you trust).
Its quite sick really.

Hi girls,
Another Aussie here! I also heard the news, and I was saddened that these things can be reported on. However, if you are a public figure, your dirty linen is going to get hung out in public...he had an affair, with his best mate's wife,a nd they were caught at a party they all attended on the weekend. Now that, to me, is just plain stupid, and he deserves whatever he gets for the hurt he has caused so many people.
Incidentally, his team-mates refused to play with him anymore, hence his resignation. And they are right...that is their CAPTAIN, and a role model for many young boys and girls Australia over. To see this man get away with what he has done, to me, would do these kids a lot of harm. I applaud the team and officials for doing this. Why? Because if the rest of society stood up and said to these WS's WE WILL NOT TOLERATE IT, you can bet your bottom dollar there would be a LOT less adultery in our world.
Love and light,
Jacky

Oh sorry.....the wife. Well I do feel for her, poor girl, she must be in a really bad way. However, it is an unfortunate risk you take when marrying a high profile person...yes the media should tone it down out of respect for her...I wish he could be hauled over the coals without her being dragged into it as well.
Love again,
Jacky

Am I the only American who finds some of their expressions to be highly AMUSING? Such as
"oz" "best mate" "sports captains" "cheaky of the media" "your dirty linen" "hauled over the coals "
Y'all are cute! So, there are other Aussies out there!!!
Yes, I agree with you Jackie, sometimes there does need to be an example made, and it is the risk you take when youre a leader, like so many people in the Bible..heck, I'd be a widow now if it had happened a few thousand years ago...worse...half the world would be widowed...perhaps thats why examples need to be made in public, but what about repentance...I wonder if its possible to see that work too in the media...
DAncer

ML lane, I found a website the other day with heaps of aussie sayings on it - It was a tourist guide. They were great - some I hadn't heard of such as "He's got kangaroos loose in the top paddock" (ie bit mad - like the guy we're talking about and other ws) and "pork pie" meaning your eye!
I work in an interpreter service (I'm one of two who are 'True Blue' Aussie, and I've really noticed the slang we use. We often forget that others may not get what where going on about!

ML,
Coaches here usually just train the team, and is separate from the Captain, who is a player elected by the teammates. Their sole job seems to give a few comments about the game at the end, but they are usually held in high esteem by the public.
Love, etc, Jackinoz!!!!!
[ March 14, 2002: Message edited by: Nina too ]

Ladies,
Must chime in here abit. You are not the first Aussie's here. We have had quite a few. I must say having been to your country on several occasions, it is a wonderful place. I have enjoyed every trip and hope to make many more.
I don't know about ML's "cute", but "fun" is definitely true.
To answer your question: We have captains of teams and we have managers of team. Captains are usually elected by the team or appointed by the managers and they are players. The coaches and managers depending on the sport are the people that coach and run the team.
I think you are refering to an individual that was a play and captain of the team right???
It is a shame when the press gets in a feeding frenzy. They don't care who they take down with the story.
Must go.
JL

Justlearning,
Well, I know that there were other Aussies here before us, but it is nice for us girls to all be online at the same time, and you have to admit, our nationality is poorly represented on the board (hmmmmm, a good thing!!!) So it is so fantastic when we find another one. To date htere are about six or seven, and ALL are in different states . Dancer, I hope you live where someone else does!!!
I have to say I have never seen a thread move so fast!!!!!!
Now I really have to go....I am supposed to be unpacking boxes!

Hi Jackie,
Well I don't know about under represented since you all don't have a hugh population, but let's hope so. By the way, I think Melbourne is a beautiful city. It sort of reminded me of D.C. in the 40's and 50's. I don't know why, perhaps the way the streets and trees were laid out, perhaps the transportation system.
All I know is that I and my family really enjoyed it. Of course, the W liked the black opals as well.
Go pack.
JL
