Submarine commander sunk after allegedly faking death to end affair.
News Article

Brainy, you do know that posting something like the above story is like waving a redflag in front of my sarcasm/irony bull.

So many options here:

Do I go with the obvious "raising the periscope"?
Do I stay with the thought of "firing his torpedoes"?
Can I approach the puns associated with "seamen"?
Touching on "blowing all ballast" is probably doomed to be "zapped".

Why do you torture me so?

Good thing I was not drinking coffee when I read this. It would have come out my nose.

On July 9, she drove to Ward's house in Burke, Va., to pay her respects, only to find out from the home's new owner that Ward had just relocated for his new job.

Oh, to have been a fly on the wall to see this poor 23-year-old's expression !!!

Quote
Ward has since been reassigned to administrative duties because of the incident.

Oh, to have been a fly on the wall to see this 43-year-old-navy-man's expression when this news was delivered.

Quote
When Ward took command of the ship, he said that it was the culmination of a lifelong dream.

oopsie! Dream bubble popped by that nasty reality needle.

After learning that Ward was still alive, the woman said she was hospitalized and discovered she was pregnant by Ward before losing the baby.

This part is not funny. A LIFE was lost because of this jerk.

After learning that Ward was still alive, the woman said she was hospitalized and discovered she was pregnant by Ward before losing the baby.

Pep, when did you start being so trusting? Stop thinking POSWH, and frame this in terms of POSOW!

23y/o "Penelope Purity" was shocked - SHOCKED! - to discover the 43y/o man she was boinking was married!

And she says after the event, "And oh, yeah, he got me knocked up, but uhhhh - that's it! - I lost the baby! (Now where did I put that lawyer's phone number? And the one from that scandal-rag?)"

Whatever innocence I had died with Elizabeth Edwards!
I'm a mother to a 23 year old who lives with me. She still has a lot to learn. But at least I am here to hammer some sense into her.

Also, I was once a 23 year old myownself.

I guess I have compassion, not innocence. More now than in times past. It's my AGE.

She already knew he was married. He told her he was separated. Separated means still married, but unfortunately many people think separated means licensed to play around. She probably did not even think of herself as an OW.

Like her and Pep, I was 23 once. I did some stupid things when I was 23 that I'm not proud of, but I did not allow them to define me and grew past them. I hope the OW in this story is also able to learn and grow from her experience.

I'm sure you are at least familiar with the Prayer of Saint Francis

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love.
Where there is injury, pardon.
Where there is doubt, faith.
Where there is despair, hope.
Where there is darkness, light.
Where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master,
grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled, as to console;
to be understood, as to understand;
to be loved, as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive.
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life.
Amen.

When I am feeling piqued at human nature .... I read this prayer.

I'm just telling you how I get through some of the less enjoyable parts of life/people/events.

It works for me (usually).
In this whole story, we don't hear anything from or about the BW.

Oh, I am certain this is not the whole story. But the whole article.
[Linked Image from services.bostonglobe.com] Pep, you are a treasure! Seriously.
I'm glad you have a mantra that
serves to comfort you.

In times of stress and torment I recall the

"Prayer of St. Guido"
"When a door is closed before you.....
kick it down and take out the scuzzball
who slammed it in your face! Amen!"

I also get through the rough times well.
The tormentors may not.

Oh, dear. The stories I could tell from when I was an idiot 23-year-old living on her own in the Big City. blush

Wow! I guess that's what I'm missing. At 23 I was through my Engineering degree, engaged to Bride, and putting myself through an MBA program by working at a fast-food joint and taking 60 graduate credits in one calendar year. smile

But then again, I never met a hunky female 43y/o naval officer!
23?

Let's see... married... 2 kids... night manager at the grocery store.

Got married the day after my 21st.

My 20's were "boring" by the standards of some. I am (mostly) satisfied with the results.

told the woman he was separated and worked in special ops

He told her he was "special ops" to prevent her from asking any questions or digging around into his past. It allowed him to carry on what was mostly an internet affair without arising much suspicion. Everything was "classified". Where he was, what he was doing, why he couldn't talk for weeks at a time, why he could talk/chat/regularly email for weeks at a time, etc. I'm surprised he used his real name at all and she was able to track him to his former home in Virginia.

At 23 I think it took guts to expose this Capt. of a Nuclear Submarine to his superiors. He targeted, lied to and preyed on this young woman (might be more to this story...as we don't all that much about her and can't presume her to be some typical fully aware temptress spider other woman). It is likely she was just being vengeful, but it was the right thing to do nonetheless. Now the Capt.'s wife and the Navy know what they are dealing with.

That's what the article says. That article is all we have to go on.
And, as far as we know, she did not lie to him.
She believed his story. That does not make her a POSOW *** in my opinion ***.
And, the part of the article I found to be sad is an unborn baby died frown. Does that qualify my mind as "innocent"? If so, thank God I am innocent.

When I was 23 I was flying all over the world and getting life lessons everywhere.
When I was 23 I started dating this really good looking guy who worked at the airline ticket counter in Los Angeles. REALLY good looking. One layover, I was sitting around the pool in Guam. I met a woman I'd heard all about, Linda. I had been told that Linda & I looked so alike we could be twins or at least sisters. So Linda & I were trading stories about how people mistook us for each other. It was fun. Then we eventually discovered we were dating the same good looking guy. Linda told me she stopped dating him when she discovered he was living with a girlfriend. And, he still was!
*** zing *** Life lesson

Linda & I did manage to serve him some misery upon our return to LA. grin I'm just sayin' ..........
Turns out he DID give the young girl a fake name. He told her he was Tony Moore versus Michael Ward. She's a pretty crafty young jilted lover to track him down to pay her last respects. At what point did she know it was all a lie? Seems knocking on the door of a house under a different name than what you thought was your boyfriend's name would have been a pretty good tip off.

Perhaps he told her about the fake name at some point in time due to his "classified" work. She was already hooked and convinced by then so he felt safe telling her ...as long as she promised to keep it a secret as he was risking his life telling her.

There's still more to this story.

New Link : Navy Commander

Another article included this quote from the young woman:

Quote
"I don't want revenge here," the woman told The Day. "I want everyone to know the truth about Michael. He does not need to be commanding a submarine. He's a deceitful man." Fox (cough) News Story

Here's a statement by the Navy in the same Fox story:

Quote
"Our Navy has a very clear and unambiguous standard regarding the character of our commanding officers, spelled out in the Charge of Command. I reviewed this charge with Cmdr. Ward before he assumed command. He understood the Navy's high standards for command leadership and he failed to uphold them," Navy Capt. Vernon Parks said in a press release.

Pepperband...I'm not gonna jump in an mourn the baby just yet. I fear it's likely this girl knew her boyfriend was a fake and drove down their to confirm it and the baby might just be a way to blow this up even more. I'm not certain...just skeptical. Even if she miscarried...she's implying it was associated with the scandal/trauma caused by Commander Ward but I'm not buying YET that they are related ...IF it happened at all.

Mr. W

edit to add: Another story had this to say:
Quote
"The woman told The Day newspaper in Connecticut that Ward used the name Tony Moore in his emails and that she only learned about his true identity when she met him in person."
This should have been a huge red flag...even to a 23 year old. Her response, apparently, was to have sex with him anyway. Still not sure about her.

Edit to add again...[each story seems to add details. He did use the nature of his work "special ops" to throw this young girl off]:

Quote
She told the paper that Ward sent her emails under the name "Tony Moore," claiming that he had to communicate under a false name due to the nature of his work. She clarified that he did tell her his real name when they met in person.
Talk about exposure...... laugh
