Hey Gang,

Some of you know that my Mom had major eye surgery two months ago and isn't doing so hot physically or mentally right now so family and friends are taking turns playing Nancy Nurse dispensing meds and providing comfort.

We [the fam, ok, me ] are cleaning up her house. I found script meds that were 3 years out of date laying around. Food in fridge that should have been thrown out last year unless she was performing an experiment.

T2 and I looked into the full size freezer in the basement and were more than amazed at the amount of ice that formed in that puppy. As far as we can see half way down there are items marked 1989. Not sure what we are are going to find in the bottom.

Ok, so now the question. Um, how long can meat or frozen items be kept. I can remember as a little kid defrosting the thing and chucking stuff out. Boy, that was a long time ago. Pop died in 1990 and I know it hasn't been cleaned out since. The stuff is frozen solid. I hate to throw stuff out, but...

Is it time to buy a dozen garbage cans?

I was trying to get G to go up and give me some advice on what to chuck, but, she is dead tired after coming home from work.

Hey Nikko,

How's it going? Get caught up in any of the big flood a few weeks ago? It did some big damage here in town. Fortunatly we live on higher ground.

Poop, I was kind of figuring everything would have to be tossed. It's gonna take days to thaw this thing out. You can guess what I will be up to soon.

Hope all is well.

Oh, for the love of chocolate throw it out!!!!!!!

My mom is exactly like that, but she is in perfect health. She comes from a family of 15 brothers and sisters, I guess she never thinks there will be enough food, so she just buys it and freezes it.

We have to check all the dates on everything we eat there. Of course behind her back so we don't hurt her feelings.

My SIL and I jump over coaches and end tables when we hear, Would you kids like a yogurt, we grab the yogurt out of Grammies hand and check the date, then we politely say, no thanks, not before dinner.

I save nothing, my mother has taught me well. I am afraid of anything that has been in the fridge for more than 3 days, and in the freezer for more than 2 weeks.

The first time I cooked hamburger in my own home I thought, what is that smell? My H said, it is the burger, I said, you mean it doesn't all smell nasty?? We never had fresh meat, it was always brown and slimy, and smelled very foul.

My mom was going to make me a ham sandwich one day, (what was I thinking) she grabbed it out of the fridge and sniffed it, and ran her fingers over it, then proceeded to get the bread out. I couldn't do it. I told her, if you have to smell it, don't eat it. She said, oh it's fine. NO THANK YOU!!!!!!

So my opinion, THROW IT ALL OUT!!!!!!!!!

Sorry for the ramble, I have issues. Why did I quit my therapist again???

Just sos ya know:

Different meats can be frozen for different periods of time. For example, beef can be frozen from 6-12 months if properly prepared and wrapped in time and the temp is 0 to -10 degrees.Pork,on the other hand can be stored for 4-6 months in the same way.Chicken- 9 months

Hot dogs/bacom- 1 month
Ground pork- 1 month
Ham- 2 months
Veal-6-9 months
Lunch meats- 1-2 months
Left over cooked meat- 2-3 months

I have a list on my frig for all this.If you want more info, check out the FDA website:

glad to hear for the most part all is well with you---sorry for whats up with mom though.

things here are wonderful---hubby finally woke up(after i tossed him out in august! ) it was the hardest thing in my life ive ever had to do. however he finally started really working on our marriage. he is doing individual counseling and also we are counseling with steve. it is all going well.

the flood ravaged our town and all the surrounding areas....it was bad....we are still cleaning up around here. i was lucky enough to not be affected. the night the delaware crested we were doing a roast beef dinner for 800. we ended up not only feeding them but the fire crews and anyone who was displaced. it was really great. i wanted to die afterwards...cooking all day for that many almost killed me...LOL!

keep us updated---we do miss you zippy!

Hey Gang, me again... I have about a half hour before Mom comes back.

Hi kyellow4,

Hey, I do love chocolate.

I usually stop off at her house every other day to gather the mail and take the garbage out. She told me she washed the dishes and cleaned up when I was out cutting the grass. I took a look at the dried on Frosted Flakes on the bottom of the bowls. Looks like I will be adding dish washer to my many roles. It's getting tough keeping up three properties and being the Mr. Mom taxi service.

Mom gets stuff on sale and expects to keep it forever I guess. Going thru the pantry is just as bad. I found canned stuff from the '80's with the bottoms rotting out. My parents had a system of writting the date on stuff. Now it's just scary to see it anymore. If there is ever a potty paper shortage we have more than enough for the state.

We would have her come down for dinner and she would feel obligated to bring something along. Pudding that is older than my stepson is bad. G and I used the excuse that the kids didn't eat enough at dinner to get dessert, so I know where you're coming from.

Yo Octobergirl

Thanks for the excellent link. I wasn't aware of the following.

Hot dogs/bacon- 1 month
Ground pork- 1 month
Ham- 2 months
Veal-6-9 months
Lunch meats- 1-2 months
Left over cooked meat- 2-3 months

We usually hit one of the warehouse places and buy in bulk lasting us an average of 4 months. Gonna have to rethink some purchases of meat now.

We were going to get a freezer just for some of the meat products, not so sure now. Mom said we could have hers, it's one of those killer ones where you could stash about a two dozen bodies. Ain't no way were could get it in the house.

I would try to smell the stuff to see if it was ok, but my parents didn't have a lot of money when I was a kid so I got the big nose, they just couldn't afford to buy the option to smell. No poop, G just looks at me funny, "CAN'T YOU SMELL THAT"? Um, no... it's gotta be really strong.

And my Buddy nikko

More than happy to hear your hubby finally woke up. "...it was the hardest thing in my life ive ever had to do". You gotta fight for what you want in this life. I'm sure you made the right choice.

T2 called me up last night and needed to chat, he is having probs with his GF. Not sure why he would want to talk to me about it, I'm D X2.
Anyway, it comes out that Toni [his Mom, my first x] is still kicking herself in the @ss for not taking me back when I was the WS some 18 years ago. I did try to make it work. Not my proudest moment in life thou.

Tom [my youngest son] is seeing a therapist because of abandonment and anger issues. I was up at the house when the boys were working on his car. I pointed out what needed to be done. They were doing the fix it in a can stuff for a blown head gasket when the problem was the rocker covers and carb were loose.

Toni stops by when I am explaining the needed repairs. The "Old Man" isn't supposed to know anything, I guess. I told her that the kids aren't that swift at car stuff. She proceeds to tell me that studies show that kids get there intelligence from their father. I smirk and ask if she every found out who their father is. Man, I like to play.

The day of the flood we were rudely awakened by the battery back up on my computer when the power went out. I got up in a stupor and walked to the bedroom door and stepped in a puddle thinking damn dog peed in the house finally waking up to find a small stream in the lower level. Going upstairs I find we left the windows open and the rain is coming in horizontally. No prob, I wanted to clean up the desk and wash the kitchen floor sometime anyway. Nows a good time as any, hey it's only 0500, what else do I have to do.

I saw and heard the flood alerts on TV and the radio, never expected it thou. Turned on my portable and the town was going nuts. People stranded in cars floating away. All roads into town flooded and then they called a disaster alert.

So of course the kids hear me closing the windows walking around with a flashlight and it turned into an improptu family morning. So I'm cleaning up in the lower level and G falls asleep on Chelsea's bed.

If everything in life went smoothly I sure I wouldn't be happy.

I miss you guys too. I check in when I get the time. K was right, this Mr. Mom stuff is not easy and I kinda miss EMS, the killing machine, just a bit. The good old days just sitting on my big ol butt watching TV, driving around or malling waiting for a call is gone.

Well Gang...

It took almost all afternoon, but [in the voice of the psychic in Poltergeist].. "this freezer is clear"

Oldest food we found was from 7/8/70. Raspberries from the farm my family owns. Oddly enough the birthday of the XW. EERRIIIEEE.

Next up, the refridgerator...
