I am always suspicious of anyone who provides no information regarding their own status and starts off on their very first post giving advice even though they have no idea what the MB principles are.

It's usually pretty easy. Lately it has been someone who registers and then immediately begins posting "advice" to newbies.[usually intended to confuse them out of following MB principles] Or it may be someone who shows up with a wild, unbelievable story that seems specially concocted to STIR THE POT about a known and on going touchy subject.

If they have another M or R website attached to their sig line, chances are HIGH they're trolling for business.

Also, recall that it was a handful of us here who busted the Sarie/BlessedTim/IWRA/Celt/SummerSky troll who stalked this board for years. BobPure was the first to see it, then Pep and I connected all the characters and exposed her gig.
This board is highly targeted by some because it contains a high population of the wounded and bleeding. Pro-affair sharks smell that blood and come over here because Marriage Builders is a huge threat to them. I have no doubt that this board has been targeted on occasion by the rats over on TOW. They are the kind of ppl who would get a huge kick out of it.

Ooops, Mel, we were simulposting... Or it may be someone who shows up with a wild, unbelievable story that seems intended to STIR THE POT about a known and on going touchy subject. YIKES! This could be why I was accused of being a troll when I first posted. Unfortunately, my 'wild story including my seeking to befriend OW and my aversion to delayed exposure' was true. Thank God some folks believed me, even after I disappeared for two weeks until after I exposed...thanks to you and many others. Remember that? Ace

One of Sarie's favorite tactics for years was to use her aliases to defend her point or take a shot at her opponent. So when I see someone jump in on a debate as their first post and take a position, then I suspect that person might be the alias of another poster in the debate.

Not sure... But IMHO once a troll-suspect has been told they are behaving in a troll-like manner, and then proceeds to post in troll-fashion, after being informed that their postings are disruptive/bad advice/rude/etc., that sort of gets me wondering...
Also, if MOST of their posts are about accusing other posters of being 'mean' to them, and they rarely post about anything else, trolling is usually suspected. These 'victim' trolls seem curiously uninterested in discussing anything but their victimhood. Oh, and they are apparently not really opposed to 'mean' posting styles in general, they often indulge in bashing/accusing/name-calling themselves, they just feel THEY should enjoy special treatment and/or they excuse their own bad postings as being in their own defense...or because THEY are going through the trauma of being rejected by a WS (um and we aren't?)...
As to how to confirm whether or not a specific poster is a troll: Maybe if it can be verified that they are posting under more than one posting name? Sometimes trolls post with different names in order to pose as another poster whose sole existence is to 'defend' the original troll-postings. That's why when we see a bunch of brand new posters, who start off with posting to bash those who are questioning a troll suspect, we think maybe the new posters might be trolls too (or the original troll in disguise).

The clues I use,
No background provided, even when asked.
A way over the top story.
A post that seems just too naive (i.e. I cheated on my spouse, I don't understand why they are upset)
The first post asks for advice and all the following posts argue with the respones.
The first post jumps into an active thread to give advice that is uneccessarily arguementative.
One and done posters. Or maybe a couple of posts and done.
Inconsistency of story.
Inability to walk away from a thread.
Opinions with no reasoning behind them.
Consistently contrarian advice on all topics.
Unfortunately, all of these are somehwat subjective, and their can be valid reasons behind any of them. So, I usually don't jump to a conclusion immediately.
BTW, I first hesitated about this thread being a good idea, since it could be used by trolls to get better at their "skills". As I thought about it more, if they avoided doing troll like things, they wouldn't have any "fun" posting here. So...

Better safe than sorry.
It would be more "judicious" not to accuse an innocent person of "being a troll"...and launching a witch hunt...
if you don't actually know.

back, I think that silence about an obvious troll only emboldens them, so I don't stay silent when I spot one. Silence causes more problems, IMO.

A troll works under cover of darkness, so pretending like a troll is not a troll only aides and abets his nefarious mission. Nothing safe about that!

False accusation, gossip, slander... are extremes to be avoided... especially in a "group effort"... when someone is newly coming onto the site.
A witch hunt is a more nefarious mission.
After all, Jesus was duly "prosecuted"... wasn't He?
(Folks thought He was some kind of "troll".)
Best to mind one's own business... and not shout, "Crucify!"... imo.

Best to mind one's own business... and not shout, "Crucify!"... imo. No thanks, it only enables evil to do so. It causes more harm to say nothing than it does to say something. Most often it is not a "false accusation" at all. More often folks here are dead on. Your analogy to Jesus is a little silly, back, since the goal of trolls is to harm and confuse. Ephesians 5:11 Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.
