are today's American's lazy and lacking grit?

No.

But we have better teeth and our children die less often than they used to.

The west was won down the barrel of a gun.

The 1873 Winchester to be exact.

The West was won by some folks, and lost by others. I don't think the losers lacked grit so much as technology.

Technology and false promises from the Union.
There was a lack of cooperation between rival tribes also.

I think pretty much the whole history of civilization is the history of one set of tribes driving out another set of tribes. Think of the Israelites driving out the Canaanites, only to be driven out themselves by the Babylonians under Nebuchadnezzar and then by the Romans. One side thinks it's injustice (the whiners, I guess) and the other side (the grit people?) thinks it's Our Glorious Destiny.

Yeah, it's all George Bush's fault!

He stole it and gave it to his big oil cronies!

JustUss, some of those "hardships overcome" were people who were already living in the west and who did not appreciate being pushed out of the way and then stigmatized as "whiners". How is pointing that out not on topic?

The West wasn't won...it was taken at gunpoint.

Folks just remember this is Pep's thread. These are her wishes. Let's not have a debate here about on/off topic.

My nephew went to Germany to play baseball (he played for Grand Valley)and they had to go to probably the most infamous concentration camp (I have forgotten the name)

If it's the one that I am thinking of...it is Dachau, and he is right. It is the one of the saddest places on the planet. You can feel the torments of the souls that perished there. I couldn't handle it. Even driving on the autobahn...and seeing the exit gave me shivers.

There is another one called Auschwitz. I couldn't bring myself to go there at all.

Now, Schindler's list didn't have that negative impact on me. While it was moving, it wasn't that negative forcefield that I met at Dachau.

My son was in High School when that movie came out. It is one of his favorite movies...he liked Anne Frank's Diary too. I toured the house that she was hidden at...in Amsterdam. I didn't get those heebie jeebies like I did at Dachau.

It must be unsettling because the deaths actually happened there and the souls are still not at rest. At least, that's my theory on it. frown

Pep, I really enjoyed hearing your story about your MIL. smile I'm so sorry for your loss...she sounded like an incredible woman.

This thread has gotten me to thinking about my own ancestors and the hardships they must have had to overcome. Certainly what they faced was far worse than $3.00 gasoline or having to wait to finance a spiffy new car.

Both sides of my dad's family have been in America since the very early 1700's. Many of them were Quakers, which I find very interesting. Actually, a couple of dad's ancestors were pretty famous...history book famous. But, that's neither here nor there when you're talking about grit.

Both sides of my mom's family were more recent imigrants. My gr. grandma was a Polish Jew who came here through Ellis Isle with her sister when she was just 16 yo after their mom died. I can't even imagine how much grit it took for her to make a new home here. She said her first priority was to teach herself to speak, read, and write English. She did just that. She always spelled America with a "k", but that's ok. wink

Thank you for this thread, Pep. It's a good thing to look back to where we came from...and to appreciate those that paved the way for the fortunate lives we live today.

Lori

One of my morning patients was giving me his family history.

Mother - dead at 42 - murdered in Nazi camp
Brother - dead at 10 - murdered in Nazi camp
Father - dead at 92 - survived Nazi camp to die of old age

My patient is 80 years old - he survived 6 years in Nazi camp.
His outlook on life is optimistic and fun loving. Married to same woman "forever".

Got grit?
