Independence Day.
What does it mean to experience life?
To be only a mother… and a wife?
Since I was a baby, this was my role.
Now years of doubt enter my soul.
I lied to myself that happiness was mine.
I have a wonderful man, and all was fine.
Four beautiful children running about.
So why is my head so filled with doubt?
But where do I fit in this equation?
My lust for life is a big frustration.
My feet firmly anchored by my white knight
What I desire is to spread my wings in flight.
To find my own happiness was my task.
Maybe it was just too much to ask.
living my days with no apparent way out.
But isn’t a fulfilling life what its all about?
To be rescued was not my desire.
Only to feel life’s passion and fire.
So now I look for the meaning myself.
Not to be seen as a prize on a shelf.
I want to stand on my own two feet.
Not along for the ride in the back seat.
I don’t want to hear how lucky I am to have found.
A great guy, who doesn’t have vises and is always around.
I don’t want to feel I am in your debt.
Owing you something makes me fret.
I will love you when you give me space.
You may be amazed by the look on my face.
This is why I long for my independence day.
Not to leave my family, just to make my own way.
Let me fail on my own, I may stumble and fall.
I will be happiest when I gave it my all.

Sheila, I dedicate this poem to you.
In writing it I think I understand your pain.
So I wont stand in your way, or make demands.
But if you do fall, I will give you my hand.
The choice is yours to make, not mine to give.

I love you with all my heart.
Michael
alot has happened since I wrote this poem, some things have improved, but the biggest improvement has been within myself. Its a hard lesson to learn, but allowing someone else to control your happiness is a dead end road. My advise to fellow poem readers/writers is look within to find the answers, they are there, if you don't find them at first, look a little deeper.
Mike

My wife sent me this page. Its a good poem. Better than the one I placed on here. But mine was more in anger and frustration at that point in time.
Seems to fit for my wife. And its something I need to do for her is let her find her own way. I'm sure she will. She's really full of life and I love her more every day.
