Dove - I, too, had no children, but had a wonderful dog and geriatric cat. Luckily, my H did not show much interest in taking either of them, as he was leaving "everything" behind to be with his OW. He obviously thought that having her was worth giving everything up. Since he was the one who left, there is NO WAY I would have allowed him to have either one of my pets. I don't know, however, if he has any regrets, or if he misses the dog (the cat died a year after he left - I called him and told him, but he acted as if he really didn't care.)
I have heard of cases of shared custody of the animals. I think that whoever cared for them most consistently should keep them, and allow the other visitation, if that is a workable solution.
I would never give up my "fur angels" without a fight!!!!
