I found a kitten in my back yard this morn.
and origionally I left it there hoping that the mother (a stray who favors my house)would come back for it
its now 7pm and the mother hasnt came back. I brought the kitten inside and attempted to give it baby formula through a dropper it took about a 1/2 dropper and wont take anymore.
It seems weaker than when i seen it this morning. i have it wrapped in a wash cloth right now but im afraid it will die... this kitten is so small that it still has its umbilical cord. i assume maybe 1 day old.
any suggestion comments etc. will be most appreciated

Hi,
This baby may not have much of a chance. It's so young. Do you want to take on a big, probably sad, responsibility? There might be something wrong with the kitten. Maybe it's mother abandoned it because of that.
If you want to go all out to save it, try an emergency vet. He/she can tell you if it is sick or healthy. If you want to take care of it yourself, keep it warm. Go to PetSmart or some other petstore and get an infant mammal formula and try feeding a little bit, often. I have a friend who raised tiny kittens. She had to feed them every two hours for awhile.
Good luck,
Estes

i would go the route of animal control-if you have that in your area. they have domestic and wild animal control in most areas. not much you can do when they are that young. good luck-my prayers are with you.

There are tiny little bottles for baby animals at pet stores. Some big stores like Wal-Mart have these supplies, too.
Just keep it warm and calm. That's a better situation than what it would have had if you had not found it.
Estes

Many years ago I found a kitten in same state. She is now 13 years old. I cut the umbilical cord with a sharp razor blade. Not too close to the body, I left a good piece attached. I called my vet and he prescribed a rich diet of special formula that we had to mix and keep refridgerated. We fed her through a dropper that I think we got from the Vet. She pulled through and has been a loyal companion for all these years. This kitten will be like a human baby, needing feedings every few hours and alot of love and attention over the next several weeks. Give a vet in your area a call and find out what he or she recommends for feeding this babe. Good luck, kind heart.

Oh gosh, I've been through this far too many times and it's hard. Very hard! But it can be done.
Most important thing is heat. Keep the baby in a box with a towel or cloth on a heating pad turned on the lowest heat. They are too small to regulate their body heat and need the constant warmth.
Most pet stores have "mothers milk". I always get Esbilac (sp?) in the powdered form. That way you can mix only what you need and it spoils very fast if you get the already mixed cans.
You can get pet nurser bottles but many times, when the animal is so tiny, the nipple is too tough for them to nurse on (even if you enlarge the hole). An eye dropper is ok but I prefer a syringe. Easy to fill, you can tell exactly how much liquid you have in there and easy to control how much you are releasing.
When you feed the baby, hold it as though it's standing or laying on the ground with it's belly down and the head slightly raised. If you tip it upside down on its back, it's easier to feed but also easier for the liquid to go into it's lungs instead of the stomach. Also, whether you use a bottle, eye dropper or syringe, be careful to not get the liquid in it's nose. Again,,liquid in the lungs.
Also, take a cotton ball or cloth, wet it with warm water and wipe the rear to stimulate it to eliminate.
The baby will have to be fed EVERY 2 hours til it gets bigger. It's a full time job,,VERY time consuming and difficult but super rewarding if it makes it.
Good luck!!!
