I won't bore you with the details, but briefly, we had near perfect weather out on the barrier reef of Belize. Except for a day and a half worth of a tropical wave early last week (when the wind clocked all around and we had some welcome showers) the wind was ENE to ESE every day, 15 to 30 knots. Surface water temperature was 32.7 C, 91 F, air temperature high about 94 F during the day and wind chill down to about 85 F at night. Always some clouds. Not enough rain - things got pretty salty crusty. Fishing was HOT. Caught a bunch of BIG cudas, spanish mackeral, snapper, and had 1 BIG tarpon hooked up for a few jumps - must have been 100+ pounds. He broke our line. The boys loved it and we all had a blast. Ran low on water due to a plumbing problem, but stretched it out without smelling too bad. The boat was big and terrific and no travel problems except American Airlines broke two fishing rods coming back thru Miami.

Dave,
What great pictures. I am so envious...the type of vacation I would love to have.

In the meantime, I managed to hobble over here to the computer---but will have to get my feet back up before the girls catch me out of bed.

What a wonderful trip...what a great memory for you and your son.

How did you get the boat? I would love to do something like that with my kids...Pat

Cleo - sunblock? You bet. It was a thrice daily ritual - morning, noon, and any time after being in the water. The sun is brutal in the tropics. Sunscreen and clouds kept us out of trouble, although we each suffered a bit from "missed spot syndrone" - the sun always finds those. Even under the shade, the reflection off the water can get ya.

Elad - very observant. Actually, that's a Coatimundi, or "Quash." A member of the racoon family, but it seems to be a cross between a cat, dog, and monkey. I'd never seen one before. The boys called it a "cat-dog-monkey thing." Very docile and gentle. This one was in a bar/restaurant on S. Water Cay - the ONLY civilization in the southern Belize reef cays. It had cold drinks and a pool table, of sorts. Note the pool cues the boys are holding.

Pat - we chartered the boat from a charter company that I will gladly refer you to if you e-mail me at DCScandals@yahoo.com. I've done this many times before in small and large groups. There are a lot of sailing charter companies operating around the world in all the nice sailing locations. You can either charter the boats "bare", i.e., no crew (bare otherwise, sometimes as well), or with a captain and cook. We were bare. Only four of us all to ourselves on a boat that could have easily accomodated 8 in comfort (and 16 in ecstasy ).

I made the reservations back in December. The charter company handles everything including airline/hotel arrangements and providing food, etc. on the boat. All you have to do is show up. We flew to Placencia, Belize and moved aboard the boat the same day - left the dock the next dawn. We go anywhere we want within the defined cruising area. Just find a nice deserted island with nothing but palm trees and pretty water and drop the anchor for the night. Mix up a rum drink and relax. Maybe catch a fish. Sorta like camping. Go to another island the next day. Or don't. After our 7 days we returned to the base and spent a night on shore in a hotel, flew back the following day. Total cost, about $1800/person. You will never catch me on a cruise ship.

Dave,

That sounds like so much fun....I don't know if I would dare do it by myself tho.

Did you all do any scuba diving? I am certified, but I haven't gone in 12 years. I am really envious..what a great trip.

I will email you with my email address when I get one set up....thanks Pat

Dave,

Have you ever looked into the Greek Ilands for a trip? I backpacked through Europe out of college---and have always wanted to go back to Mikonos or any of those islands. It was so beautiful. Thanks again for the info....Pat
