I have been reading the book " How People Grow..... What the Bible Reveals about Personal Growth". One of the subjects it tackles is accountability partners. I am a big supporter of accountability partners and small group bible studies. As I read this part I realized that for some this was not enough.
Here is what the book says:

quote:
Accountability is very important, and the Bible tells us over and over again to build it into our lives. But here is the caution: Accountability is not a cure for lack of self control. The problem with accountability is that all it does is "count". It is like the temperature gauge on a car; it can tell you the engine has problems but it can't fix it. Accountability can expose a problem but it can't fix it. Just as a car must go to the mechanic to get fixed, so the person must get further help past the diagnosis from the accountability group. A person with a problem has to enter the process of discipline and structure as well as find healing for what is driving his behavior.

I thought this was the thing that would keep me on the straight and narrow. While these are great things to be involved in, a lot of times we need more to help us get the connection from others to recover ourselves.
Book says:

quote:
This connection also impacts people who are in recovery from addiction or compulsive behavior. Hardly anyone completely recovers from an addiction without connection to a support system. Some stop their addictive behaviors, but their relational patterns do not change, and most times they relapse if they do not so group work.

In my case I didn't even start to recover until I began my group work for my addiction. They became another accountability partner for me and through this I was free to live.
My point is we should not rely on accountability groups to fix our inner problem. Get involved with a proper group so you can begin to restore your marriage.
Love in Christ
