when using a cell phone. I know if you use a calling card from a land line it doesn't show on the bill but what about a cell phone? Since cell phones charge for airtime would it show if a calling card was used to place a phone call and if so how would it show?

I don't know if it would. I would think it would Don't calling cards have an 800 number you are supposed to dial before you dial the number you are calling.
My guess, is you could call the company that issued the calling card and get a statement about calls made from the card. I would assume there is a record of calls made. If someone was disputing the number of minutes left on card and they said they didn't use that many minutes, there must be someway to verify this. I've never tried

When you use a phone card with a cell phone, the number to the calling card company shows up on your bill and you are charged minutes accordingly (usually it's an 800 number).
The number you are calling to does not show up on your bill as it is dialed through the phone card company.
So if you call someone for 10 minutes, it'll show up as a 10 minute call to a 1-800 number.
