Can some one tell the difference between a psychotherapist, psycologists, and a LCSW,MA-LMHC. I need to see one and all those Letters aren't telling me much. Also does a man have better insight on how other men feel or should I stick to a woman whom it would probably be easier to consider "friend" and talk more openly???? Thanks

All these terms are quite confusing. A pyschologist is one who's degree is in pyschology (usually a doctorate, though some states will license a masters' degree).

The certifications differ a bit from state to state, but LCSW is licensed clinical social worker here. I don't think we have LMHC (but I bet it is licensed mental health worker), we have LPC (licensed counselors) and LMFT (lic. marraige and family therapist) & some other designation I forget.

Pyschotherapy is generally any therapy that deals with the mind...it can be practiced by a pyschologist, a counselor, a social worker, etc. And, to make it more confusing, there are many theories of pyschotherapy, and one counselor may draw on several.

We went to a woman pyschologist who was great with my H. She was mostly a behavioral orientation (which is very consistent with MB), but also drew on other areas of pysch. I do think her mostly behavioral approach was good for us (along the lines of follow thru on the behaviors, and the feelings will follow).

Your H may feel more comfortable with a man, but any good counselor should be effective with both men and women. And, it seems that sometimes men can talk more easily about feelings to a woman.

Kam, thanks for info. My husband will not be going with me however, just me. I see no point in him going and sitting there lying about anything happening.I simply could not take it and would Im sure get very angry. He has left this mess up to me to get out of best I can. So what does that say about him?? Don't tell me ha
