Trying to keep my mind off my WH.

I turn 40 in February and my birthday is on Valentine's Day. I do not want to spend it alone and it is highly unlikely that WH will be spending it with me (we're approaching one year since d-day). So, my sister and two friends have offered to go anywhere I want for a weekend away (and can get free plane tickets). Pricey beach resorts sound good, but are too expensive.

Anybody have any good ideas about a city that would be fun for a three day weekend? My thoughts so far are New Orleans, New York City, Charleston, Santa Fe, or San Francisco.

Hi unsure...

Geeez that's quite the confluence of events...40 years old on Valentines Day probably w/o your long-time spouse...

I don't blame you for wanting to plan a getaway...

You've picked some great cities and I doubt that you could go wrong on any of them...

I love NY...Wow, they should really think about using that line <img border="0" title="" alt="[Razz]" src="images/icons/tongue.gif" />

I also really, really like Santa Fe...

If it were me I would probably choose the one that would be the easiest to get to from wherever you are...

I think the worst thing would be to plan a nice getaway to take your mind off some things and relax and enjoy and then run into plane problems or other travel hassles that could ruin the experience...What you are looking for is less hassles not more...

So I guess I wouldn't try to do a cross-country trip for the weekend but decide between one or two nearer places depending on what you want to do...Party???? <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="images/icons/grin.gif" /> Relax???? <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="images/icons/smile.gif" /> Shop??? <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="images/icons/wink.gif" />
Sun yourself??? <img border="0" title="" alt="[Cool]" src="images/icons/cool.gif" />

I am sure any one you pick will be enjoyable. especially if you have fun people to share the weekend with. It is very nice of your sister and friends to make the offer...

I am sure you will have a great time...

I vote for San Francisco, it's my favorite city!
Lots to see and do and you can also drive up to the wine country for the day!

Have a great time whatever you decide! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="images/icons/smile.gif" />

elad - I know I need to plan something and thank goodness I have great friends because last year was hard to be alone on valentine's day (WH invited me out for a drink at a downtown hotel prior to his flying to CA and it was awful/he cried and gave me a card telling me he loved me but was not in love with me.)

Good advice on not travelling too far. Santa Fe is the closest location, but I've been there twice in the last year(I took my sister there for her 40th birthday and was fortunate to have a business meeting there that I extended to the weekend).

At this point, we are now thinking that the Napa Valley would be a good choice (although not the best weather this time of year). Frankly though, anywhere with access to a spa, good food, wine, and these friends is great. I live in Colorado and we were just going to go to a ski resort here, but that particular weekend the prices go sky high and the slopes are mobbed.

LadySing58 - Thanks for the suggestion.
