I've had the unfortunate recent opportunity to need to do some forensic data recovery for 2 different companies that I consult for.

You see, people think that clearing the Recycle Bin on their computer makes their files disappear forever. It doesn't. Not by a long shot.

I've been using Final Data 2.0 Enterprise over the last couple of weeks and I've been really happy with the results. Turned up lots of useful stuff that the former employees thought erased!

http://www.finaldata.us/ is the URL to buy the software. There are cut down, less expensive versions, Ive been using a $200 version.

Just be aware that you need a place to restore the files to that is NOT the hard drive you are searching. And you need hours of uninterrupted time on the computer. For example, the computer I just finished working on, took 16 hours to scan. Then of course it took me a while to sift thru the contents and recover what I wantec.

Using this stuff I've recovered yahoo emails and other interesting items, including messages sent to women, and escort services contacted. Thats not what I was looking for...but of course, the obvious alternative use came to mind

And yes, some wives will be getting an anonymous tip from me unfortunately

Who am I kidding? No, I don't.

Actually, my conclusions on notification are somewhat solid (while the feelings are mixed), but man, it's still hard to be the messenger.

This type of program is exactly what the police are using to go through H's old hard drives, to find the data on his child porn downloads, etc.

The police took at LEAST 10 hard drives (not to mention the hundreds of cd's and floppy discs) with their warrant back in January... and last I knew, the crown is still asking for more time to give the defendant (H and his lawyer) the latest info that's against him.

The fog is obviously incredibly thick in his head... you'd think that with all he knows about computers, he'd know that this type of program is available. Actually, I KNOW he knows about it, b/c he's told me in the past that there IS a way to retrieve deleted materials from a hard drive, but it's a pain to do.

BR: to your knowledge, does this type of program retrieve information from reformatted hard drives too? (H was constantly reformatting our hard drive on our shared pc... he'd always lose my information, like email addies, and resumes, etc... but without fail, and of HIS information was always there! ).

Thanks for the vent. And thanks for thinking of sharing this information on here.

Hi BR,

This is the sort of stuff I like to hear about.

My question to you, I checked the link, I assume I don't need the photo one, unless I suspect photos being sent via PC? So the other one should be sufficient?

hey est ~

well in one particular case, this wife needs to know she's at risk - if he hasn't already given her an std. He's clearly a full blown sex addict. So hard to be the messenger yes, but harder to stay silent....

topie - this particular program doesn't do formatted drives - BUT - yes, formatted drives can be recovered, there are even more powerful programs that do that kind of recovery.

sue - you dont need the photo recovery software unless you are trying to recover photos from other digital media. If you are just trying to recover photos downloaded off the web (ie porn), you can just use the regular data recovery software.

quick tip - carefully go thru ALL temporary internet file folders (and sometimes temp internet files are in more than one place). Cached pictures and web pages are most enlightening.
