It seems to me that lately that my daughter(6) has been there to cheer me up or to say somethin so off the wall that I am floored.
My lovely wife and I have been separated for almost four weeks. 2 weeks ago my daughter asked me if mommy was ever coming home. I told her I didn't really know. I told her that I wanted momma to come back home. My daughter replied "Me too, but I guess we'll just have to get over it huh, dad?" I could only answer yes.
That same weekend we were at Hooters...errrr...my daughter love the big barstools you get to sit on. She told our waitress that she was pretty and then looke at me and said "isn't she pretty daddy?" If she had bee one of my friends I would have kicked her shin under the table. I laughed and said yes. My daughter then proceded to ask her to get ice cream and go play mini golf with us. I turned a deep shade of red.
We stopped at 7-11 to get a slurpee after a bike ride. As we were sitting by our bikes drinking our slurpees she said. " hey dad if you take off the s,l,u and r off slurpee we would be drinking pee!!"
It amazes me how smart and insightful our kids can be. She once told me that there was an invisible thread connecting us and it would stretch but never break.
I guess what prompted this post was a book "Falling Up" by silverstein. I was just flipping through and reading poems to my daughter. She likes this book because there is a lot of references to burping. I guess she is in a phase or something. Anyway there was a poem that pretty much summed up everthing that I feel and probably most of you do too. We have discussed the Tao of pooh and the LOTR and how they can give us insight into things that they probably weren't intended to.
Hell I have even received insight from Spongebob a time or two. I don't really know where I am going with this. But it seems to me that kids got all this stuff figured out. They play, laugh out loud regardless of where they are at, not scared to love (anyone), trusting and tell you when they are mad. They look at the world with wonder. Sitting in the front seat with the window down letting the wind blow their hand up and down is a thrill to my daughter. New shoes or a cheap neclace from those supermarket prize thingys and I hear that I am the best dad in the world.
When I look at my daughter I see, in her, a lot of the things I want to be. She is 6 and I look up to her. Damn't I made myself cry. anyway here is the poem "The Voice" By Shel silverstein.
There is a voice inside you that whispers all day long "I feel that this is right for me , I know that this is wrong." No teacher, preacher, parent, friend Or wiseman can decide What's right for you--just listen to the voice that speaks inside.

That's a great story, d-rose. I got a daughter the same age, and know how cheeky & cute they can be! It's part of the kids' survival instinct I think, to get over any situation. Having said that, let's not kid ourselves, all these events will leave deep scars and your daughter is unfortunately likely to follow the behaviour of her role model, which is her mum.
good luck, N

Nick,
My lovely wife has her issues as do I but if my daughter turns out to be anything close to the person my lovely wife is we have done our job as parents. My lovely wife is a wonderful and caring person...i would be proud for my daughter to turn out like her.
