Boy, you've got me! (b)ut if I had to guess, I'd probably say "Beneath the Planet of the Apes"

How about this one?

"The gravity is the same as Earth's, so the air must be breathable!"
(but I can't remember the movie, actually, myself!)

Or, one you should know:

"You wormfaced, crawling, sand-brained piece of lizard turd!"

And here I thought you were the encyclopaedia of rare science fiction quotes, sigh!

It's from Frank Herbert's book 'The Jesus Incident', the second book (there were four) from the 'Destination: Void' series. The quote is from 'Ship' an all-powerful, all-knowing artificial consciousness unwittingly created (by the crew of a ship of human clones sent into space) to replace the 'death' of their organic mental core (human brain hooked up to ship to oversee all functions, including life support). 'Ship' is so powerful that it can change reality by merely wishing it and thus considers itself worthy of 'worShip' by the humans. His favorite saying to the religious zealot (who was supposed to be the 'safety switch' to destroy Ship before it was to be activated) 'Ah, when will you awaken?'

It's from one of the Dune books, right?

And to think I actually stopped to read this.... <img border="0" title="" alt="[Razz]" src="images/icons/tongue.gif" /> <img border="0" title="" alt="[Roll Eyes]" src="images/icons/rolleyes.gif" />

I have to say the best quote I've seen in a while (or perhaps funniest is a better word) is TMCM's tv and sex pronouncement.

I read "The Jesus Incident" many years ago. I guess I forgot!

Herbert had a talent, for sure. One of the most chilling novels I ever read in my life was by him: "The White Plague", about a genetic engineer who goes nuts after witnessing his family being blown up by being near a car bomb when it goes off. He goes so nuts he engineers a plague that kills only women, and it doesn't stop until there are only about 1500 of them left in the world... ...chilling!

Yep, the "worm" insult is from the first Dune book.

do you know the source of this one? (because I've quoted it before, 2):

"The cobblies will get you if you don't watch out!"

Yeah you're right about Herbert's book 'The White Plague'(early 80's) being a very chilling book because it is very plausible, especially now with all the advances in genetic engineering.

Clifford Simak's "City."

A very hard book 2 describe, dealing with the migration of mankind to Jupiter (in the form of jovians) and the development of a philosophy-based society of talking dogs. Simak was "famous" for what most people call "pastoral scifi". Settings were almost always rural, with rural characters, strange, sometimes funny si2ations, but with some really clever ideas.

I think it was Simak that invented the idea that became the "holodeck" on Star Trek, though Simak never used the term (he thought it up in the late 40's or early 50's, if I remember correctly, long before "virtual reality" was ever talked about or could have been tried out).

planetarily,
