An extraordinarily great man and the greatest president in my lifetime. May he rest in peace. What a sad, sad day.

I think the way that they handled the entire illness was such a class act.
I am a liberal democrat, yet loved the man as president.
May he rest in peace. I'm sure his last years were anything but... and prayers for Nancy and the family also. Had to be hard on everyone.

It certainly is a sad day but what makes me just as sad/mad is the way the media has to be there to cover every single detail of things like this now. Some may disagree with me here but I think the family deserves a little privacy such as when the hearse came and picked up his body!!

Not only a great President-but a wonderful H to Nancy-has anyone read their book Love letters- what a true example of happily married. Nancy has treated him with such respect thru all of this.

First president I had the pleasure to vote for. I took a lot of crap from most of my friends as a freshman at a very liberal university. They all called him "RayGun", so sure he was gonna nuke the world to hell.
This world is a much better place today because of him, and many of my old college friends even agree!
May you rest in peace, President Reagan.

Great communicator, but not much as far as substance goes. He accomplished little other than running up a monster deficit.

It is a mixed day in my mind. It is very sad that an era has passed, but given the situation in the final years it was his time for passing.
I have watched a lot of news events about him and they bring back many many memories both professionally and personally. I had the pleasure of attending the his first inauguration and it was the last I have attended. I always thought he had the right idea about management and goals for the country.
I was explaining to my 17 year old, about taxes and how they topped out at 92% and how inflation had pushed middle class people into the 50% bracket, and how the interest rates were running 15-18% and he just looked at me and said, "that cannot be right." I just smiled and said it may not have been right but it was the situation. People forget the "malaise" as Jimmy Carter called it.
It is a sad thing to lose someone like him, but the good news is that we had someone like him when it was needed.
I always thought he and his W were a class act and frankly they clearly showed that a good sense of humor is really needed in tough times.
It is very sad.

National pride came back. The military was rebuilt, to the extent that the Soviet Union collapsed under the economic burden of keeping up. Taxes went down. Inflation went way down. Unemployement dropped. Over 16 million jobs were created. The stock market went up almost 150% during his tenur.
Sorry but your statement is ignorant at best. Eric

(1) 220 Marines killed in Beirut (2) Reagan's administration gives money to Nicaraguan contras in direct violation of the law. (3) In 1983, the nation recorded its highest level of poverty. (4) Reagan administration supplied weapons and intelligence to Iraq AND Iran during the Iraq-Iran War (reminds me of a scene from Woody Allen's Bananas"). (5) Called Oliver North, a person who lied under oath to Congress, a "national hero." (6) Of course, the largest increase in stock value in history was during William Jefferson Clinton's tenure as president.
Reagan gave great speeches. Of course, they were fraught with distortions, but they were excellent.

No matter what you think of him as a President, the love story of Ronnie & Nancy is one for the books..... It was truly touching to see her lay her head on the flag drapped coffin.....
May God be with them in the coming days......

I also read the Nancy and Ronald love letters book. Very beautiful. I have tremendous admiration and respect for her. What a committed love. He was a man of character, something that really stands out nowadays in a world in which strong character is few and far between. [ July 11, 2004, 01:30 AM: Message edited by: LoveMyEx ]

It is not inappropriate to discuss an ex-President's faults just because he died recently, unless you are discussing them with his family.

A toast to the best there has ever been…
Ronaldus Magnus… probably the single best president this country has ever seen. The father of modern conservatism, a man who brought pride back to being an American, the man who almost single handedly ended the cold war without firing a single shot. He will be sadly missed but his legacy shall live forever. We should be so lucky as to have another president of the magnitude as Reagan. With the fortitude to stand by his convictions and believe in himself and his countrymen when faced with the full force of adversity from not only the evil empire and old Europe, but the equally sinister elitist Washington press corps. He proved to us that evil does exist (communism), that America is and always will be great, and that tax cuts are not only the answer to just about every economic problem but do indeed save lives.
I was 4 years old when he first was elected, and was proud to cast my vote for him as an 8 year old in my third grade election… which he won hands down by the way. Which is kind of funny being that I am from Minnesota… the only state he didn’t win in that ’84 election…most likely because his opponent (Mondale) was from here as well. I shudder to think of what kind of country this would be today had he never been elected…
I salute you sir… hail to the chief.
