My husband had been doing a bit of maintenance work at the motel where I work over the past year, fixing broken pipes and stuff, contract basis.
He jokes about coming out here to do the 'maintenance' (meaning I needed SF).
Last week I had an emergency- 100's of gallons of water pouring under the floor.
I called to tell him. In an impatient tone of voice he said he would be out later that night and hung up. He didn't show.
I couldn't wait for him to show up so I hired someone else to fix it.
The other day ( 5 days later) when he called he said in a casual way that he would be out one of these days to work on the problem.
(If I had waited for him I would be sitting in a swimming pool typing this.)
I didn't say much, just that the problem was sorted out.
I have been wondering what to say to him when he deigns to call again.
He has this idea that he is indispensible, that I am waiting by the phone for him to call etc.
I have been trying to think of a way to let him know that while he has been out dancing around his van or servicing the OW or whatever, life went on without him.
I guess when he phones I will have to tell him that his services are no longer needed, that since he didn't show up I had to make arrangements for someone else to do the maintenance .
He can think what he likes.

Why, thank you!
I am not very good at playing games, dissembling or setting boundaries , but I am all for natural consequences.
Reaping what you sow and all that.
I am hoping he will feel territorial or something.
Maybe I should tell him, "Well he's not YOU but he gets the job done" or something along those lines...
(You know, come to think of it...hiring a cleaning woman might arouse a womans ire a bit. We women can be very territorial about another woman taking over 'our' kitchens.)
