I've been a stay-at-home Mom for the past 9 years. Now I'm ready to go back to work part-time this fall when kids go back to school.
What do I do about a resume? Do I make one that includes all the "real" jobs that I had up until I stayed home? Or do I just make phone calls first and see what happens?

Hi there! First let me say I admire you for going back to work....it's tough getting back into the "working" world after being a mom at home for that long! I've been a SAHM for 11 years and cannot imagine going back to "work"! I'd say to go ahead and put together a resume first....that will clarify for you all the marketable skills you have. If you make phone calls, they will probably ask what experience you have anyway, so the resume will get it clear in your mind. It will also give you a better idea what specific jobs you might be qualified for, so you won't end up making a bunch of calls that would just be a waste of time for you. I wish you ALL the luck in your job search!

onlywords, thanks for your reply. I will get my resume together. You're right that it will get my skills together in my head, even if they don't ask for it. Last fall, when all heck was breaking loose, I did take a career assessment class and know what kinds of things I would like to do and have skills for.
This will be an interesting journey and good for my self-esteem. I need something in my life that is just for me ... something to be proud of, instead of everything relating back to my H or our children.

A couple other suggestions that might be of use to you. Since you don't have any work history for the last nine years you will find it difficult to get someone to hire you that doesn't know you. Therefore, I suggest telling everyone you know that you are looking and see if they can give you any good leads and/or referrals. Most jobs are NOT posted. I know the fabulous job I have now was not in any newspaper.
Another good way to get back into the workforce is through the temp agencies. That is actually how I got into my field right after college (when I had no work history). I went to my first temp assignment and didn't leave for 5 years!
Good luck!

Couple of suggestions to help in your job search. Since you don't have a work history for the last 9 years people that don't know you may be hesitent to hire you. Therefore, ask everyone and anyone that you know for any job leads or referals. Most jobs are NOT posted anywhere, people find them through word of mouth. I know my current job, that I love, was not in any newspaper or web site.
Another option is to sign up with a bunch of temp. companies. It's a great way to get your foot in the door and build up some work history.
Good luck!
