I've read the following this morning and want to share. It's very short but the message behind is so huge and striking:
No one falls in love by choice, it is by CHANCE. No one stays in love by chance, it is by WORK. And no one falls out of love by chance, it is by CHOICE. [ July 19, 2004, 04:33 AM: Message edited by: Suzet* ]

quote:
No one falls in love by choice, it is by CHANCE.

Couldn't disagree more. This kind of romantic hogwash makes life miserable for married people. If they buy into it, they find themselves falling in love all the time and claiming they can't help it.
No, just like planting a garden, we make EVERY choice regarding how open to emotional attachment we'll be. I've been attracted to many women. I didn't fall in love with any of them until I CHOSE to let myself.
Would've thought you'd know better, Suzet.

LowOrbit,
A while ago I have posted a long thread on this same issue…whether falling in love is a choice or not…
so I don’t want to go into depth about that again...
If you intersted to read it I can post you a link to that thread...
In short I can just say that in my opinion, our emotional reactions towards a person is NOT a choice although our actions are as we can control our actions… We might respect and admire a particular person very much but try as hard as we might, never ‘fall’ in love with that person...
The ‘in love’ feelings I developed for OM was definitely something I didn’t want OR choose. However, I choose not to ACT on the feelings...
If it was so easy to choose to fall in love, so many people here wouldn’t struggle to get that “in love” feelings for their spouse back (including me)...
Then everybody could just choose to be in love with their spouses again and everything would be honky dory.
